I just picked this up from a local shop. I honestly know very, very little about these basses. What I can tell you, is that this is an absolutely amazing instrument. The workmanship is second to none. It is almost eerie how much it reminds me of my Foderas. Very high craftsmanship. A bit like a hypothetical cross between a Fodera and a Smith actually.

What I can also tell you is that this one has been loved. This is not a closet queen by any stretch. There are multiple wear marks on it. The frets appear to be in really good condition though. It sets up very well and plays like the best of the custom basses out there.

It's also quite light. I'm guessing that it is actually under 9 lbs.

Given the wear, it is priced to move.

$2200 including shipping east of the Mississippi. West of, please add $40.

Full disclaimer: I'm guessing on the specs that aren't obvious as I truly do not know the background of the bass at all.

These early "R" basses are super rare to EVER see used... They are now Roger Basses...

You can see the Carl Thompson all over it!

Whoever is lucky enough to get this should feel fortunate I don't have the $$ right now...

You are absolutely right! It definitely has that CT feel in terms of workmanship and influence. It also reminds me of the best of the early Foderas too -- Lot's of really nice wood everywhere with tons of attention to detail.

If it's anything like my R Bass SC5 (Mahogany body... and I normally don't care for Mahogany :D) it should be an excellent all around bass. First thing I did with mine was do a full setup: new strings, straighten the trussrod, lower the saddles, raise the pickups. The different was pretty amazing... feels damn near like it's playing itself. I recently sold my 96 Emperor 5. Amazing bass. I kept the R Bass


Ray's build quality is excellent. Mine is a finesse bass that sets up low and still hits hard. Knowing what I know, if I didn't already have one...

You still holding on to one of the SC5s from the early days? I have my SC5 buckeye burl from about 03 or something. NEVER leaving!!

Sweet R bass, vaguely remember that one.

Yeah, mine is not going anywhere anytime soon. One of my favorites. I've been gigging it even more regularly since I sold my Emperor during a mature and responsible moment.

This one is ridiculously good. It's a tremendous amount of custom bass for the money. :thumbsup:

Some nice trade offers but really looking to cash out. I do have a soft spot for Stingray Classic 5’s and Big Al 5’s though...;)

I just checked the string spacing at the nut and it's 1 1/2". The fingerboard may actually be Wenge also... Not positive. Sounds great.

I'm going to pull this one down. I used it last night and it absolutely killed. I brought it as a back-up and my primary bass went down. The R-bass was unbelievably good. It reminded me of my first few Emperors. I'm really digging the Haz Lab also.
