Do you have any more info on this era of ESP/Schecter? It’s hard to google much info about their relationship other than people arguing about their import models. Also any info on the pickups, since it looks like they might not be originals?

No arguing, facts here.

The wiki page on Schecter guitars is explicit about the Shibuya buy out post Dallas era.

As far as i know Monstertone pickups never stopped making product since the Van Nuys era. These are reissues of the original design with the desired coil tap circuit and were supplied directly to the ESP custom shop.

Collaboration and eventual ownership of Schecter guitars by ESP is also well documented.

Neck thicknesses ~ 0.8" at fret 1, 0.9" at fret 12. Definitely more early 60's than late 70's like.

I'm betting that this Bass is Pre-Dallas and is a well preserved Van Nyes, CA Schecter. Couldn't sware if it would have been assembled by Schecter Guitar Research, but definitely parts (all the brass hardware) and no serial number on the neck plate.

I had a Van Nyes Schecter solid Koa P/J that was so sweet. It had one of two Maple/Koa fingerboard Jazz hard V necks that SGR ever produced. Hot pickups, too.

I recently solid a '96 Schecter USA Custom Shop (LA) Traditional Jazz Bass with tapped Monstertone J pickups...very nice!

Sorry to disappoint, no Van Nuys here. Schecter-branded ESP with Van Nuys appointments. ESP custom shop/Navigators are awesome basses in their own right, just different.

So it is a Japanese ESP, made for Schecter sometime during/right after the Dallas period, before the guy from ESP bought the brand name and setup the Schecter California Custom Shop in L.A. during 1996?

It looks great...better than any Dallas/import period example I have ever seen!

You should contact Tom Anderson and/or Pat Wilkins for information...

Yes. Wouldn't be surprised if it was bought at Sunset Custom Guitars in Hollywood one of the few ESP (Histake Shibuya) retailers at the time.
