Details

This Mayones Viking 4 String is in MINT condition and has only been played a short time. It has an ash body with an ebony fingerboard. The action is VERY low with little to no buzzing on the carbon-rod-reinforced 34.25-inch neck. It has 2 Bartolini soapbars... Bartolini M34C-T (bridge) and Bartolini M34C-B (neck) and an Aguilar OBP3 preamp.

In case you're wondering why I'm selling after just a couple of months? I'm in "mid-life crisis mode" and am spending lots of time trying to find my dream instrument once and for all... It's probably the best feeling bass I've ever had the pleasure of playing. It is truly awesome. But the tone isn't quite what I'm looking for, given my current uses. And so I'm moving on. I can't imagine it not being the dream bass for someone else out there. I'd love to find a good home for this mighty Viking!

$2800 plus shipping cost.

Save on shipping with a local pickup if you're up in the Northeastern US!

Thanks!

How would you describe the tone?

Good question! It’s actually pretty diverse. It’s got a great jazz tone. The mids are very distinct and I’d say it’s got a slight compressed quality to it. It gets growly (partly since the action is very low) if you dig in. I think it’s awesome for prog and jazz and funk. Some metal guys seem to like this and similar Mayones lines. I don’t think it emulates a P that well if that’s what one is looking for. I’m going to post a video in a moment where a guy is playing a fanned fret version. I should have done that before.

Here’s a video of a guy playing a bunch of techniques on a Viking. The one he’s playing has fanned frets and Aguilar pickups as opposed to the Barts in mine but I think the overall tone is pretty similar.

I played one of these today at Chicago Music Exchange (same color.) It's a seriously gorgeous and impeccably-constructed bass capable of any tone.

Hey! Well if you’re tempted let me know and you can come check it out! I’m in Southern NH by the MA border off Rt 3. I believe I actually bought this one at the shop that has the others for sale that you mentioned (SS Music? Great shop.) . The only reason I’m selling this for this low price is (1) these models aren’t super well known and so I know there isn’t a huge market and (2) I’ve got a custom bass being made for me now and I hope to use the sale of this Viking to finance it so I don’t want to sit on it forever.

Why am I selling this if it’s so wonderful to play? Good question… I fell in love with it at the store and bought it because I was in the market and it felt so damn good. And sounded so damn good. What I did not do was give enough consideration to the types of projects I would be applying it to. At the time I was playing in an original alt-rock band and had a potential 80s cover gig lined up. I thought this would be great for that. I would have been right. The 80s band fell through and shortly there after I was asked to play in an original punk/glam band. as wonderful a tone as the Viking offers, it’s really not applicable to punk… You need that really thick single coil Fender-y sound for that IMO. And so I found myself simply not using the Viking for either of my current projects. This is not an instrument that is meant to sit in its case. It needs to be adored and taken out on the town! And so I posted here to find it a proper suitor. :)

Any interest in a trade for a EBMM StingRay Special HH - Charcoal Sparkle with Ebony Fingerboard. I got it last year from Sweetwater, gigged once, non-smoking house. I’ll send cash your way as well.

Hey OldTimer! Honestly I would consider that (those HH basses are sweet.. especially the sparkle finishes) except that I’ve already put cash down on a custom Sandberg that is currently in the process of being made and I’m hoping to finance it with this sale, even if it’s done before this one sells. So I’m just not in a position to take any trades for that reason alone. But thanks for getting in touch!

I appreciate the consideration @Shlabotnik , I may be back if I can get it the EBMM sold before the Viking goes.

Yes it was at SS Music,,, I thought about going there and checking the one out there to see if I like the active barts because I can easily drive by on the way home from work . but I'm currently using P basses thru a 400+ for a traditional Picking the P type sound for clashy type rock n roll.

I agree the P/Mesa would be better than the Viking for what you're doing. If you ever decide to expand your arsenal you can come check this one out if it's still around... the Viking is truly awesome for many other genres.

Here's a sample video of me playing The Big Money by Rush on this Mayones... Enjoy!

Currently, and in this recording, it has light gauge strings on it. I'm happy to put back the original strings it shipped with if you prefer, or simply include them in the case.

I agree with you! Someone should definitely buy this already so you can’t see it anymore. Someone put this poor bassist out of their misery! :roflmao:
