So I took a chance a while ago, bought this as an impulse buy, knew I was gambling... and it didn't pay off.
This is what I assume to be a home-build. It IS NOT a Stambaugh, I sent pics and Chris wrote back confirming its not one of his. I don't know who built it, where, or when. Its a neck-thru 5 string. Looks to be ash wings, walnut (maybe?) top, maple neck with walnut (again, maybe?) stringers. It's 35" scale, has a bartolini pickup (not sure which one, not gonna take it out
), and bartolini preamp. There is a mini toggle and the volume knob is push/pull (not exactly sure how either is wired). It is heavy, I don't have access to a scale right now but I think 10 + lbs is safe to say. Its got a recessed strap lock button at the bottom and a strange non-reccessed button on the upper horn. I only hung it on a strap once and there was a hint of neck dive, but the heavy body seems to counter it, I've never done a lot with this so its hard to say what regular use would be like.
It is well made. The neck has a D-profile where its thinner and almost flat across the back, it feels comfortable to play. Not sure what the finish is, I think its poly with some grain patterns visible through it. There is a maple truss cover but it's got red gig bag fur stuck in its finish. It sounds cool, but there are some issues.
I bought it with little to no insight about its current condition and when I got it, the neck was the definition of bow-and-arrow. Monstrous relief and insanely high action. Whats more the truss rod (dual adjustable, can't be shimmed with washers) was mechanically seized and the Allen key hole was stripped. I had to use penetrating fluid and cut a slot in the truss rod adjustment so it could turn with a wide blade flathead screwdriver. I did get it free, but there is not enough adjustment to correct it. Its strung with a light set of Dunlop brights (supposed to be really low tension) and it plays... meh. It works and the action is not the worst I've ever seen, but not the best. The frets are in good shape but I have no idea if they're level.
I took a shot and ended up with something that is beyond me. Time to let someone else fool with it. I've read about clamping in relief (I have not tried), maybe that would solve its issue? I don't know, figured I'd be straight up about what it is and isn't and see if anyone wants to trade stuff.
I'd be interested in 5 string necks or bodies, maybe pickups. Some time in the future Id like to do a parts build/mod. Pedals could be cool too, been thinking about adding some dirt. I don't know, if you're interested throw stuff at me.
