Details

Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray EX 4H in natural finish. Maple fretboard with a tortoise shell pickguard. 3-band active preamp, bridge mutes, and Schaller strap locks(will include strap hardware as well). Maybe the best playing bass I’ve owned, super low action, straight as an arrow neck. Weighs in at 10.8lbs. Some very light surface scratches, but overall in fantastic condition. There is a small ding on the fingerboard and 18th fret at the low E string, visible in the photos. Serial number is D09526 on the bridge, but does not register in the EB SN database for some reason, so I’m not sure of the year. Comes with a non-original hardshell case. The HSC is meant for a Sterling, but it still fits snug inside. Also comes with the original black pickguard. Currently strung with D'Addario 45-100 nickelwounds. Price is shipped in the US.

UPDATE: Though there's no dead giveaway, but with the help of users here I've come to the conclusion this is an EX model. Same made in San Luis Obispo parts, just assembled in Japan.

Did someone scratch off the 'made in San Luis Obispo CA' from the back of the headstock or something?

Serial number doesn't show up in the database. "Made in SLO" engraving not present on the headstock. Non standard case. First post ever by OP yet registered on this site since 2012.

Not my risk profile, but I will concede that a bass that plays and sounds good is good.

Silly question. But do the early 90s rays normally have that? Based on the battery case this is an older Stingray. Same with the mutes.

Fair point. I don't have the expertise to answer but if someone credible comes along with that as the answer I'll delete that post.

Edit: I deleted the post. Quick search on the EBMM forum reveals there are a few legitimate reasons why a given specimen might not have the engraving.

Serial number part is still odd, but if it's a mid 80s model who knows. And could be a great price.

That really does look like a mid 80s - early 90s model to me.

Another user PM'ed me, and suspects the SN misnomer is because this is a Made in Japan model. All the same specs and parts as the USA, but assembled in Japan. That would also explain the lack of "Made in SLO" stamp.

Also, the suspicion of the listing is understandable, due to my lack of posting. Been a lurker for the last decade, mostly using the forum for purchases from the classified section. Linked my 100% positive Reverb profile in my signature for good faith. Thanks for looking y'all!

Where about are you located in Virginia? I'm in central VA, near Charlottesville.

Any interest in trades + cash? (I can't in good conscience buy another bass without thinning the herd).

Trade chips:
  • MIM Fender Jazz, pickups upgraded to Fender '74 Pure Vtg, cool custom paint job
  • Epi Thunderbird Vtg Pro (alpine white)
  • Squier Vtg Modified Fretless Jazz
  • Ohana OBU-22FLM fretless bass uke
  • Epiphone El Capitan acoustic bass
  • Peavey 450 Nitrobass amp head
  • Carvin BR115 cab
  • lots of good pedals

I’m over in Richmond. Can’t say I’m on the lookout for any new basses or gear. Big reason I’m selling this is that I’ve come to the conclusion I’m just a P Bass guy through and through.

These are fantastic bases. I had one when I lived in Japan. All parts are from SLO, but wood cut, aged, assembled and finished in Japan. The finish is different from USA models of the time : polyester instead of polyurethane.

I believe Kanda Shokai had Fujigen making them. Very, very nice instruments.
