Buckle in. This is a long one, but this is a cool bass, so it’s worth it. I’ll do $3000 flat for anyone willing to pick it up.

Might be willing to trade for another Roscoe (fretless fives strongly preferred), a Nordy P5, or maybe something else with five strings and 35” scale. Never hurts to ask.

Up for sale is this VERY cool Roscoe Century Signature 5 string bass. This is their top of the line, hand carved, largest bodied bass. This bass is 12 years old, but looks brand new. There’s a very good reason for that, which I’ll explain below.

Specs:

- Spanish Cedar body.

- Exhibition-grade flame maple top with matching headstock. Finished in tobacco burst.

- Maple/Cherry/Maple/Purpleheart neck (Wedge neck comes standard with the Signature series).

- INSANE Exhibition-grade birdseye maple fingerboard with Abalone 12th fret inlay.

- Dymondwood nut.

- Roscoe-spec Bartolini quad coil pickups and 18 volt, 3 band preamp.

- 35” scale.

- Black Hipshot hardware.

- Roscoe/TKL hard shell case.

Now for the super cool part…

Remember the Aguilar “Artist Loft”? It was a place that existed (from the mid ‘00’s to around 2019 or whenever they sold out to Korg), where the fancy endorsers went to play all the Aguilar amps/cabs/pedals/pickups, etc. They recorded sound clips, demo vids, and other stuff there.

Anyway, a ton of high end bass builders made instruments for the artist loft, and this bass was one of them. It was made in 2009, and used by none other than Jimmy Haslip to demo the OBP-3 preamp and the (then) new DCB pickups. After that, they basically just yanked the pickups out of it and stashed it away.

Here’s the demo, if you’re curious:

When Aguilar was sold to Korg a few years ago, the collection of 30-40 basses in the artist loft were not included in the deal for some reason.

Fast-forward to earlier this year...

John Worthington (of John Fox Bass) contacted me, as he had heard I was looking for a Century V. He had just acquired nearly all of the basses in the Aguilar Artist Loft collection, and asked me if I was interested in this one. I’m not much for bursts, but this bass just blew me away, so we struck a deal.

As mentioned above, it didn’t have any pickups in it, and the OBP-3 is my least favorite preamp in the whole world, so I had John send it directly to the man who built it - Keith Roscoe.

At my request, Keith installed a brand new set of Roscoe-spec Bartolini pickups, with the matching NTMB-R preamp. He also treated it to a “bass spa day”, which included a PLEK job, new strings, and a full setup. This work was completed in May of 2021 to the tune of just under $750.

I have only played this bass on one gig since I purchased it, and it performed beautifully. It’s balanced, clean, super versatile, and like all Roscoe fives, the low B is incomparably massive. I’ve owned 9 Roscoes at the time of this writing, and this is the lightest one I have ever played. Bathroom scales vary, but I believe it’s less than 9 pounds.

Anyway, it’s gorgeous, looks/feels/smells new, and is truly one of a kind. I’m currently having another custom Roscoe built, so this one probably won’t get much attention when the new one arrives. That said, I’m in no hurry to sell it. This bass is amazing, and I’m more than happy to hang onto it.

Asking $3500 shipped and fully insured to the lower 48, which is a steal in my opinion, considering this was a $7,000 instrument when it was new.

Beautiful bass. I have 2 Century (fretted and fretless 5) basses, but just Standard Plus. I actually had a lesson with Jimmy about 9 years ago. He's an amazing player and human. Wish I could help you out. It'd be fun to have a bass he played.
