Beautiful, unique Gibson RD Artist Bass. This is the active version which takes a single 9-volt battery, and features a rather interesting MOOG-created pre-amp. In the late 70's, this was pretty unique tech, while todays tech is objectively much much smaller, and better. That said, there are tones in here I have never heard on any of my other basses.
True Gibson rock, but with an option to get very wild in the tone dept.
This bass is all original with the exception of the bridge, which was upgraded to a Hipshot drop-in, 3-point Gibson replacement. This is a common upgrade on most Gibson basses. I don't have the original. I did, but I mistakenly sold a gig bag and the bridge was in there. Alas, the original case is not included, so I have recently purchased a new Thunderbird gigbag which the bass fits into perfectly.
Tonewise, it can get wooly like the EB basses, and dark like a T-Bird, but with this pre-amp, you can balance all that out with some clarity from the bridge pickup and the active circuit. In summary, it strikes me as pure rock, heavy and serious. I suppose that's why Krist Novoselic ( Nirvana ) favored these.
Obviously these basses were finished in nitrocellulose lacquer, and the finish has an abundance of attractive checking throughout. Truss rod works fine, all electronics are fine. Frets are in great shape. Nut is 1-5/8", weight is a little over 10 lbs. A little like a T-bird, the bass feels a little long, so someone accustomed to short-scale basses will find this quite different. anyone else should easily adapt.
