Hi,

I'm selling my lovely upright bass. I got it about 8-9 years ago. I only play it about 30 minute a year, so I'm going to sell it and buy some car parts. I prefer cash, but would also consider a trade for a less-expensive plywood bass plus a big stack of cash.

The bass is a Shen model SB150, which is a hybrid bass (carved top with laminate back and sides). It has a hand-rubbed oil finish, which was available from the luthier for an up charge to the model. The finish is much nicer than the standard finish. The bass was set up by a well-known bass luthier in Indianapolis named Nick Lloyd. Mr. Lloyd also made a nice adjustable bridge for it and upgraded the tailpiece "gut".

It's in excellent condition, having only been out of my smoke-free, pet-free house a dozen times. I've played it with a variety of strings. The adjustable bridge allows for a range of action for different strings. It is currently strung with Spiro E&A and Gamut Red Diamond D&G. In the photos it is strung with 4 Spirocores. I prefer to keep the Gamuts if a full set of Spiros are ok with you.

It has a David Gage Realist pickup installed. This style of pick up is a thin foil material that goes under one foot of the bridge. The pickup could be easily removed if you don't need it, but it does no harm to the acoustics of the bass and sounds excellent if you need to amplify the bass for a gig. I played a couple of blues gigs with this bass as a substitute bass player. The bass sounds great both acoustically and amplified.

I will include a nice heavy-duty padded bag for the bass. I don't have a bow, and know very little about them. You should budget $100 or more to get a bow. You can find good info here on Talkbass.

I'm not sure what else to say about the bass. I think it's a great bass, at a great price vs performance point. It doesn't hurt that it's pretty too, much nicer than many "student"-level basses you might find. Don't let the fact that the back and sides are not carved deter you from getting a hybrid bass. You (might) give up a little sound-wise, but gain durability and resistance to changes in humidity, and subsequent expensive repairs.

I forgot to photograph the bag. It's black.

No shipping on this bass. I can drive it part way to you within reason.

The price is $2650 with the bag, pickup, and 4 Spiros. Thanks for looking.

Good deal on a great bass - I have its big brother (Shen 190 hybrid) and they are excellent instruments, well worth the price. Especially when well set up as this one clearly is.

I am interested in this lovely instrument as a graduation gift for my high school senior son who is passionate about the upright bass and jazz. We live in southern Wisconsin and could pick up & pay cash.

You have a lucky son. Sounds like a nice weekend roadtrip!

He's a good kid and we love that he spends more time practicing music in the latter part of high school than playing video games, definitely want to encourage that lol! Completely on his own accord too.. he just caught the jazz bug! His dad and i wholeheartedly want to support his excitement about it. I have a feeling he will fall instantly in love with this instrument if it ends up going to us.

Katie, the bridge of the bass has Nick Lloyd's stamp on it. He's a distinguished builder/luthier. If he set up this bass, you couldn't do better. And this hybrid Shen is a perfect "starter bass" for a young jazzer. This is a great move by you and your husband. If, by chance, your son decides he'd rather be a professional golfer than a bassist, you can likely get 100% of your investment (less travel expenses) back by reselling the bass. With its pedigree, you shouldn't have any trouble finding a buyer.

Thank you for sharing this, it's much appreciated! I'm somewhat familiar with Nick Lloyd from his name coming up on various threads on this website and while researching bass instruments- it's cool that some luthiers have essentially rock star status :-) I am not in the music world so it's all been a learning curve and I think it's really cool. It's also really cool that well made and respected instruments like this can maintain their value and be enjoyed for many years!

Now that we've talked it up and there is an interested buyer, the OP should up his ask, no? ;)

I think more info is needed on this critical factor. Makes me wonder what you are up to? ;)

I think your OP could be held out as a prime example of how to be up front w/ a listing, and your ask impresses me (and others) as entirely reasonable. Good on you.

Hope this deal works out smoothly and quickly both for you and whoever ends up buying it.

For jazz, he'll love this bass for a long time. I own an '01 Shen hybrid and was setup really well for me. At 60, I can't imagine owning anything else. It sounds great bowed and pizzicato and jazz is it's primary function. Built like a tank and can take some abuse too. Good luck and enjoy the road trip!
