The Avalanche is bass fuzz inspired the late, great Felix Pappalardi and his thunderous, buzzing bass sound heard on Mountain's live recordings like The Road Goes Ever ON. Armed with a Gibson EB-1 bass and a wall of cranked SUNN 2000S stacks his basses high output neck pickup drive his overdriven amps created a sound like no other, sort of a crossed between a distorted Hammond organ and a tenor sax put through a Maestro W-2 Rhythm N' Sound. While I won't say that the Avalanche nails his sound it definitely brings you close enough to make you want to play an epic 3 hour version of Nantucket Sleighride!
The Avalanche's circuit design is quite unique as far as fuzzes go, it has two sounds that are heard side by side, one a round, sustaining and mildly overdriven, and the other a fuzz who's harmonics are triggered by your picking attack. This unique effect is created by a resonant low pass filter circuit but rather than it creating the usual low pass filter effect it creates animated harmonics that are heard as the fuzzy overtone. Because this part of the circuit is triggered by your playing a subtle enveloping/blooming of the harmonic overtones is heard. It is because of this characteristic of the circuit's action that the Avalanche sounds so different on guitar. The threshold of the triggering is tuned for a bass guitar's signal which has a higher amplitude and of course stronger low frequency content and a regular guitar.
CONTROLS: PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL OF THE CONTROLS ARE INTERACTIVE WITH ONE ANOTHER AND CHANGING ONE CONTROL SETTING CAN EFFECT HOW THE OTHER CONTROLS WORK AND THE INTENSITY OF THEIR EFFECT.
DRIVE: This control allows you to attenuate the signal driving the input of the Avalanche's circuit which in turns allows you to clean up the signal, though it will not get completely clean. Because the harmonics of the fuzz overtone are triggered by your attack and thus the strength of the signal hitting the front of the circuit the fuzz effect will not be the same when the DRIVE control is turned down as it is when it is turned all the way up. The DRIVE control has a huge effect on the volume at the output of the circuit so you will need to adjust the AMPLITUDE control when adjusting the DRIVE control.
RESONANT FREQUENCY SELECTORS: These two 3 position toggle switches allow you to select different capacitors in the low pass filter part of the circuit. Each switch is for a different capacitor in the circuit. The effect of different settings can be fairly subtle, these switches are there to allow you to fine tune the harmonics of the fuzz to your own taste and individual equipment.
OUTPUT DIODE COMPRESSION: This switch allows you to add diode compression to the positive or negative half of the wave at the output of the circuit. The effect of this switch is a combination of signal compression and subtle clipping.
AMPLITUDE: This is the volume control. There is a massive amount of gain available so be careful, it is easy to unintentionally overload/overdrive the input of your amp if you are not careful. This can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your personal taste and what type of amp you are playing through.
The Avalanche can be powered by a standard 9V DC, center negative power supply or a 9V battery.
