This is a stunning MTD 534-24 on all counts.
It begins with a scarce Amboyna Burl “10 top” over the Makore body. The neck is maple with the asymmetrical design Michael Tobias has perfected. This one has a really nice profile too. Then you have an Ebony finger board with perfect fret work. The headstock is capped off with matching Amboyna Burl and MTD world logo. Finally, matching Makore and Amboyna Burl electronics knobs complete this piece.
Daniel Tobias has recently said Amboyna burl is the most difficult wood to find these days.
It is 34" scale with 19mm string spacing. Hipshot tuners and Hipshot A style bridge.
It is in excellent condition and well cared for. Michael Tobias is a genius when it comes to wood pairing and his selection here makes for an instrument that is wonderfully full, rich, wide, and percussive tonally. To my ear, this wood combination makes for a wonderfully well-rounded MTD.
Everything is original the way the man, Mr. Tobias, hand crafted it. Custom MTD Bartolini preamp and Bartolini active pickups with 3-way mid shift switch.
Looking it over carefully there is not a whole lot to say about imperfections. Just a little flaking on the ends of a couple of the tuners. Maybe a couple very tiny indentations near the input jack. I think that's about it worth noting. This one has been babied.
An OEM plush MTD hard shell case is included. The case has a few scuffs/tears on the outside but is otherwise great.
In this video, Mike Tobias talks about Makore as a tone wood.
This isn't a bass I am unhappy with or looking to frivolously part ways with. Quite the contrary but I am primarily making it available as a potential trade involving a Ken Smith 5 string or Tobias 5 string with serial number 2044 or earlier (a "pre-Gibson") or MTD 534 with the "super" pickup config (just because I want to try that configuration sometime). Might be interested in a FBass. Have something else to offer? Who knows. Drop me a PM.
Thaks for looking!
