I used to own an 80 L-1000 identical to this! Such a great bass. Best neck I’ve ever played. Truly a perfect bass. I wish I never sold it. GLWTS!

Well, I've tried to talk myself out of it, but for several reasons I have to buy this bass. Yeah, I'll pay the $1600 through paypal, that's about $300 more than I've ever paid for one of these...

So this bass arrived a couple of days ago, and it has a penciled neck date on Tuesday of the week that my "Special Order" white bass was made...

I was making a living with my Gibson Ripper in 1981, when I decided to buy an L-1000. I memtioned to a store owner that I really wanted a white one, which was not an option on the price list, and he said that G&L was just getting started and was much more responsive than most guitar companies, "Let me make a call." So in three or four minutes he was back and stated "I talked to Leo Fender and he said he'd been thinking about adding white as a color option, yes he would build it." So, I ordered it and paid in full right there. It was supposed to be done in two weeks, but when I called after the two week period, the owner (Jimmy Williams of KC Music and Pro Audio in Overland Park KS) reported to me Leo didn't like the ebony he had in stock, so it would take another two weeks. Every build detail on my bass and this one is exactly the same, except for the rosewood board.

Right at that time they were changing over to a tapered post on the Schallers, but mine and this "new" one both have the straight post. I fully expected this new bass to have a datestamp within a week of mine, and it has 11/10/81 penciled in the pocket, with the initials CL beneath. This is the Tuesday of that week, my bass was pencil dated and initialed by the same person on that Friday.

I paid $524 for mine, including the case. Your case is different than mine, and I don't think it's original, BUT Leo had a habit of taking mfgr samples, once he had examined them, and shipping them out the door. The bridge on this "new" bass is also a tooling sample, as is mine, the production smooth powder coat bridges started at B007200 ish, and they're not as shiny. More than you wanted to know!

Attached is a composite image of Leo's handwriting and three Pencil dated neck pockets, the second week of November 1981. The mahogany bass which has a light streaked colored ebony fretboard, was initialed on the Wednesday of that week. Based on this evidence, I'm saying there is a very strong likelyhood that these pencil date/initial notations were scribed by Leo, who I do know took a personal interest in my Bass. But what do you think?

very cool. quite an illustration of how how non-sequential the serial number were, right? Or is it because the numbers were on the bridge and the bridges were experimental finish samples? I have B002679, which has chrome hardware, slot poles, and Schaller branded tapered post tuners. I'm not curious enough to know the build date to take the neck off without some other reason.

please post this in the Basses section so it can reach more people!

same, except I knew I wasn't going to buy right now. I have a black/maple that I mentioned in the previous post and they would have made a sweet yin-yang pair.
