OK this instrument can sound like just about any bass you can imagine. From a P-Bass to a Modulus Q5 or a Jazz Bass to an Alembic Series II. And that's without even using the built-in Roland GK3B Midi Pickup. :D

I took a stock Line 6 Variax 5 string bass and had Mike Patton (Eclipse Guitars here in Denver) install a Roland GK3B bass Midi pickup kit into it. The bass now has a 13 pin Roland Midi cable jack to connect up to your favorite Roland Midi device. Mike installed up and down patch select buttons as well as well as a three way mini-toggle (Bass Only/Synth+Bass/Synth Only) and a synth volume knob (see photos below). A Red LED tells you when a synth is connected. Mike did a great job putting this all together and his routed control cavity alone is a testament to his skill.

When connected to a Midi device like a Roland GR-20 this bass really tracks well. I can play both the bass and flute part of Jethro Tull's "Bouree" all my myself!!! Pretty cool really. ;)

I'm no longer playing in a band where I need to be able to sound like an orchestra and I don't see it happening anytime in the future so I figured I'd offer it up here on TalkBass.

I know this isn't for everyone but if you have ever wanted to get into the wonderful world of Midi this would be a great way to do it. The bass itself plays quite well and the Line 6 bass modeling is surprisingly good. Add the Roland Midi pickup and you are virtually unlimited in your modes of expression and creativity.

Major Price Reduction due to need for cash!!!

SOLD for $1,195.00

I also have a Roland GR-20 that I will include with the bass at no additional charge. That's a $500.00 value for "free"!

Here is a link to info in the GR-20: http://www.roland.com/products/en/GR-20/index.html

The bass comes with a VERY nice Line 6 gig bag as well as the original Line 6 direct box and power supply that will power the bass remotely (instead of using the internal batteries). I will also throw in a Planet Waves TRS cable and a 13 pin Roland Midi cable.

There are more electronics in that Variax than there was in the Saturn Capsule.... Bump for a cool rig. I'd probably proposition you for it if I weren't so content with the standard Fender/G&L lineup.

Hi,

I assume this will do pitch-to-midi for use with outboard midi gear (not the GR20 sounds). Does it track well when used like this?

I have never used it with an additional outboard MIDI device but the GR-20 is designed to allow you to string additional MIDI devices so I assume it will work that way.

The tracking is actually pretty good but it does vary with the patches. Some are better than others. I have used the string and orchestra patches the most and they really sound killer when you blend them in on a pedal bass note. Also the vintage analog synth sounds can't be beat. This baby can do everything that Taurus pedals can do and then some!

It's a VERY cool toy for those who want to adventure beyond the bounds of normal bass playing.

This is still available. I'm willing to consider trades +/- cash. Particularly for a nice lined fretless 4. Anyone?

Very cool. I already have two Variax 705s, but somebody needs to move on this. FWIW, I paid ~$1100 for each of mine new/stock. Line6 blew them out when they discontinued them, first throwing in a free Bass POD xt Live, and later lowering the price from $1200 to $500 until they were all gone. I think they are absolutely worth $1200 though if you do any studio work or need a variety of classic tones. They are Korean made and the $ is in the electronics, but they're worth it, even without the upgrades and the GR-20. They're definitely not toys; Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Fiona Apple) (among others, including me ;) ) uses these regularly in the studio.

You can hear soundclips on Line6's website of the stock tones:

Here's my review from here on TB:

This is a steal, guys!
