This is an incredible bass. Being that I own 3 of them, I can tell you that they each have their own character. Mike is building me a 534 that should be ready in Dec.

Beautiful bass! Are the pups original? I thought everything that early had the "slope-sholdered" barts. Would you entertain a possible trade? I have #1188 which is a Classic, Purple Heart over Walnut, 6 string. It is in excellent condition, no scratches or dents to speak of, just a few "cloudy" spots common in Michael's basses. I have pics if you're interested. I don't want to sell it, just trade it for another Tobias since I have the same bass in a 5 string which is my preference.
Thanks,
Tbass

I had the opportunity to play this bass yesterday for a few minutes.

Guys... It's killer!

Looks beautiful. Super low action. Different sounds galore. And geeze, it's a piece of bass history!

I'm usually not much for the 34" scale with a B string, but the B was tight and sounds great too.

If I had the money, I'd purchase this bass from this excellent Talkbasser.

I asked Mike Tobias about the pickups and he thinks they are original. If they are not original, they are still OEM pickups. I do not have any spare parts. The pre amp is every bit as hot as my other two pre-Gibs.
Mike thought that this was built around the time they had made a few changes.

I have seen those P-ups on some older Pre-gibson basses and they are Original!!!!!! In fact i have a friend with a Classic 5 pre-gibson in the 700's serial number with the same p-ups.
In fact you will see those pick-ups on most ALL pre-Gibson 6 string basses.
Bartolini ran out of the old step shell casing at a time and replaced it with the square shape until they got them back in stock.

Edited,,,Although i have seen those same pick-ups on some Older Pre-Gibson basses Mike Tobias emailed Brian Barrett saying that they may not be Original so Brian could be correct on the matter including the curverd pick-ups on the 6 string models which i stated incorrectly saying that the flat ones came on all 6 string models which indeed are the curved.

This is killing me- I've been looking for a Pre-Gib 5 exactly like this for about 8 years...and I don't have the cash.

This must sound incredible.

Well, I have a Basic, and a Classic, and Mike Tobias is building me a 534 right now. No, I do not want to get rid of it, but I have significant other that I have to appease. Actually, it is just fine if it doesn't sell, I can at least claim that I am trying to sell it.

I hear ya, I was in the same situation not too long ago with the Basic & Classic I had and I decided to get rid of them and keep the Signature.....Glad I did!! Good luck with "trying" to sell it!! hahaha!!
