Left-Handed?
  1. Yes
For sale is my left handed Atkinson 5-string P (or J?) bass. This Nordy-loaded, Jazz-bodied fiver is a killing instrument for anyone looking for a vintage vibe with modern low B needs. The neck is thin, wide, and comfortable, the low B is solid, and the pickup and hardware are top notch. Bass weighs about 10lb, balances great, and feels like an old friend.

From what I can tell, Dan Atkinson didn’t produce many left handed instruments, and I’ve only seen one other fiver with his name on it, so this isn’t a common instrument- probably a custom order. The finish is the most spectacular part, in my opinion- real vintage style nitro that has been well cared for but shows the marks of being played. The neck and the body finish feel like my 70s P bass, but thinner. Cosmetically a 7.5/10, but for those of us who like a little wear, 10/10.

Nice looking bass. I haven’t been able to find anything about the builder. Was this a parts bass or hand built? Does it come with a case?

Hey, sorry for the late reply. The builder was a guy named Dan (I think) Atkinson, who was somewhat popular for his parts builds in the early to mid 2000s. As far as I know, he’d buy parts from Warmoth and similar manufacturers, and then dress them with fancy nitro finishes, assemble them, and do the setup work. The goal was to give the buyer a vintage look and worn in feel without the price tag- there are a few threads on him scattered over TB. I’ve never seen evidence of him doing fivers, but it does look like his work. I also don’t know where he sourced these parts, as I got it secondhand. As for a case, I can throw in a Kaces hard case I have laying around for an extra fee- maybe $50?

@Warpt here's a quick video. Bass is dry into logic with no post processing. Volume and tone are all the way up.

Dan made great basses. Leftys are indeed rare GLWS.

Smyrna, Tennessee.
Just did a cursory look under his name in Atlanta-seems he was from there- & an obit popped up from 2017.

Referenced a meteorologist who passed with Parkinson’s Disease. Could explain his sudden departure from the scene.

No mention of bass building but this gentleman was a ham radio enthusiast. No idea if the same man but RIP either way.
