For sale Pigtronix Philosopher Bass Compressor Micro

What are your personal thoughts on this pedal?

Okay, so I sat and plunked around with this thing a bit last night so I could formulate a decent response to the question above. Truth is, I haven't had this long so it didn't get much use. But I do have another compressor to compare it to, that being the Xotic SP (roughly the same size and features except that it doesn't have a "Grit" knob/effect).

I'd say the two overlap in function in terms of use as a compressor. The Pigtronix gives you more control over the threshold (Sustain knob) whereas this Xotic has a 3-position lo/mid/hi switch with some internal dip switches. The Pigtronix has a much more range with the knob and can go from very light to a heavy squish. Both are sort of optimized for low-end thanks to the blend knob. Only difference I'd note there is that the Pigtronix feels more heavily compressed at the noon position than the SP. Both are capable of very usable, non-intrusive (think signal-squashing) compression, and beyond (I should note I primarily play finger-style and can't really speak for slap).

Then there's the Grit knob on the Pigtronix, which the SP does not have. So whereas I consider the Xotic an "always on" compressor (for my purposes anyway) the Pigtronix could also be used as a fuzz or fuzz/sustainer pedal. The distortion is pretty sweet. Personally, I liked just a little bit of it to warm the signal just when using this thing for light compression.

Ultimately, I decided to stick with the SP simply because the two knobs and limited threshold control just met my "set it and forget it" goal a bit better. Honestly, I could happily gig or record with either pedal (again the blend knob is the key to getting more subtle compression). And while the dirt is cool and kind of unique, I have other pedals to handle that.
