Edited to add: Fully carved, swelled back, 41 3/8 string length.

This is a Shank Strings shop bass from 2003 built by Vasile Gliga. I am its second owner. It was originally purchased new from Shank Strings by the principal bass player of the Williamsport Symphonic Orchestra which is where she played it until she suffered from an injury and was forced to retire from playing upright bass. The bass comes with a case. There are leather bumpers on the side of the bass. It was originally purchased for $6800. You have a choice of strings:
Velvet Blues, Spirocore Mittle (screams under a bow with these) or Helicore
orchestra. It currently is strung with Velvet Blues. It is a loud and very deep sounding bass.

This bass is in mint condition and has always been cared for by me and Mike Shank.

The bass has lived mostly in my music studio and rested in my climate controlled/humidified instrument room when it was not in my hands being played. It is one of 2 upright basses I have, the other being a 100yr old german. I bought the bass as a secondary bass because it sounds great and I was playing in a number of shows. I wanted a backup in case my german bass went down. This Shank bass did venture out into the world me to some gigs because of it's presence. It is loud and very punchy and in acoustic settings, I needed this. It's really a beautiful bass. As much as it kills me because good basses are very hard to find, I am selling it because I don't play as much upright bass as I used to because I left the groups I was playing in. I still play once a week at my studio, but I cannot justify keeping it.

So the sound of this bass: It has a very solid low-end fundamental punch and the decay of the note resides in the lower mids playing legato lines pizzicato. Another way to describe it is the attack of the note is a low-end boom and it blooms in the low mids. Easy to hear pitch. It really sings under a bow with spirocore or helicore. Actually, it screams under the a bow and helicore really brings out the beauty under the bow.

I priced the bass to sell though there is some wiggle room on the price. This is a wonderful seasoned bass. Please don't expect to low-ball me. The bass if from Mike Shank's shop, his shop bass at the time. If you know Mike and his attention to his basses, you will know the value and quality in what you are getting.

I have a few sets of strings available to be on the bass for sale: Velvet Blues, Helicore orchestral hybrid, and I believe I have a set of Spirocore Mitts too.

I am located in West Chester, PA.

Here is a vid so you can get an idea of the sound of the bass. The bass was a little asleep in the first video. In the second video, she's woken up. (I don't play anywhere near as much as I used to, so please bare with the playing and no effects were added to the audio:

Just an update. I had a mixed set of strings on the bass as i said in the video. I put on the remaing 2 D'Addario Helicore Orchestra strings and am letting the bass settle in. Tonight i will get you a vid bowing. I couldn't get a player to come over so I will have to play myself. I dont have chops on a bow. I was just practicing Frere Jacques I can probably pull that off. I'll do a few scales too. If there's anything in particular you want me to do, let me know.

Here you go. Me with a bow and I am not good at all. Since I fell away from arco years ago, my cake of rosin has turned rock hard so my bows weren't grabbing that well and it created that annoying harmonic sometimes from it not grabbing. This was recorded the same way as the other videos. There is a full set of helicore orchestral on the bass now. I let it settle in for a couple of hours before doing this. I sniped a scale and some open bowing from my recording. I don't want to post something so horrible it turns someone off so I snipped my best.

So without further ado, Bowing the Romanian Lady:
