i'm looking for a new bass this christmas. specifically something that is 5string. i've been playing my fender american p bass for a couple years and i think its time for a change. so, what is the best 5-string under $1000?

best 5 string under $1000?

A new Lakland 55-02 should run about $1000 - MF sells them for $1119 and I think there are a couple of people around here who might be able to do a little better.

Lakland imports are nice, but IMO so are the MTD import fivers. You can get an MTD Kingston five for around $500.
MTD Kingston vote here. Killer 5 for usually less than $450, IIRC. And one HELL of a B string. The lakland has a wider range of electronic possibility, but it's playability and it's B string can't touch the Kingston.
You can snag yourself a Carvin 5 string for well under $1000, and if you check their "guitars in stock" section they have a bunch of really nice 5'ers already built and ready to go, some of them with figured flame or quilt tops for right at or under $1000. They have a really nice LB75 up there with a swamp ash body and classic sunburst for $800.
Or, have them custom build you one with your choice of woods and options (wide asym neck, etc.).
They have a 10 day no questions return policy too.

Ditto. Best factory basses available in the price range, IMO.
I got my LB75 -- custom color, straploks, case, shipped -- for under $900 several years ago, and they're still very reasonably priced.
I will still say the MTD Grendel is the best for this price range, but Skylines are just as good. I've played a Carvin, not sure if it was in this price range, and it was really good as well. I think the trend is going to this price range with a lot of manufactures. Now you can find great basses at or even under 1K now. There's no need to spend 2K on a bass now when you can buy great basses for less than 1K.
There are tons of nice fivers under a G. Most all of them in fact.

Haven't dealt with this store before but their shopping cart seems to have no problem putting the 1005 in there at $995.
