best 5 string under $1000?

I don't think you can get an axe more well put together and with more tonal diversity than the G&L 2500. Neck is chunkier than an Ibanez but old Leo got it all together the last time aroiund.

Definitely check one out before you buy anything else. KTJ music online will sell to you for the cheapest price. I've never dealt with them but a few guys at the G&L forum over at the Dudepit have scored some custom orders for real good prices. I think they have a return policy if the axe isn't right.

You should really look into the Peavey Cirrus line of basses. A wide variety of woods, fantastic construction quality, killer tone. 35" scale, neck thru, 18v pups, 3way EQ, etc. Easily available new or used. Check Ebay, there are usually a few on there. I've owned four of them and they're better than the Roscoes and Warwicks I used to play. Just my opinion of course!

you're still a bit over the $1000 mark if you have to pay tax or want to upgrade to air shipping. Or if there like Carvin and make you buy a case. not sure about that last bit.

True, but not by much. That's brand new, too. You can probably find one used for less.

Or just put a little extra on the credit card and eat cheap for a while ;)

Carvin LB75 (new)

MTD Kingston (new) or MTD Beast (if you don't mind passive electronics). You might also be able to find a Grendel (active) under $1,000 - I've never played a Kingston but everything I've read about them is positive

Cort Curbow 5 - get one from Greg Curbow himself

Tobias Renegade or Growler - You should be able to find one of these out there. These are the post-Mike Tobias, pre-Korea era U.S. made basses. I have a Killer B from this era (which is more than $1,000).

Peavey Cirrus (not sure about the price). These are just great basses and I'd get a 6 if it wasn't so darn big!
