Portaflex cutting out poll

I should mention my PF 500 is on it's way to me but I won't vote until at least a month of use so I have enough time to test it.

I had a PF350 but sold it. I used it for several gigs and practices and never had an issue with it.

My first PF-500 died on me in the first 15 minutes I had it. It released the magic smoke and the smell of burnt wiring.

Ampeg was very good at getting me a new one.

The second one has several gigs on it now but, it's started acting alittle funky also.
Fading in power at times on the gig.
It has now started doing this "fading" thing at home.

I'm back to using my G.K. MB2-500 head at jobs with no problems...


The PF-500 head sounds very good.......but, I've lost the trust...

Had a PF-500 but sent it back. I liked it but I just don't use my amp enough and with all the trouble reports I was afraid I would be well out of warranty if and when any trouble showed itself. In the three weeks I had it, never had a problem.

Edit: My PF350 has never given any problems at all.

I'm a little torn on how to answer this. Mine won't cut out at full tilt unless I dime all the controls. Then it will cut out for the transient and return almost instantly.

I'm also torn as to whether I should contact Ampeg. It's not how I would ever run it, but the more I think about it, I feel that it shouldn't happen under any circumstances no matter how ugly you have to get it to sound to do so.

Protection circuit. While there are a small handful of folks reporting cutouts without being cranked to insanity, those were manufacturing defects. You're trying to crank it as hard as humanly possible, so it's a protection circuit cutout.

right now it seems that a 30% of the pf (no mater 350 or 500) have cutting out issues... I was going to buy a 500 but that makes me double think about it...

I'd not hesitate to get one myself.
I'd just be sure to buy from a reputable dealer-as one always should, with any amp.

I wonder how many people are just buying these because of the ampeg logo and they have seen their favorite players using ampeg.
Reliability does not seem to be their strong suit. That much is certain

and the "cranked to the point of insanity" thing...I don't know if loud is that point, but 350 is SVT numbers.

My PF-500 and PF-115 cab just came in on my lunch break at work. Had only 20 minutes to test it out before going back to work. Sounds great!
Hopefully I do not run into any issues.
