EMG-40 sized Single-coil or splittable humbucker?

I just got myself a fantastic Dingwall, and find that though I'm in heaven when it comes to comfort, playability and tone, I'm missing the Narrow aperture Single coil snarl. The Dingwall pickups are great and very articulate, but polite. Acoustically this bass speaks with more bite and snap than I feel is translated by the electronics.

So, I'm looking for a drop in replacement for the pickups. I know that they are EMG 40 shells, and they are 4 conductor leads. Here is my list so far:

Am I missing something? Also, does anyone have any thoughts on perhaps dropping in an ACG filter pre? I'm not used to filter electronics, and I've wanted to try one for some time. The Dingwall pickups in Series are very close to the sort of sound I'm searching for, so I'm tempted to try to modify their output with a preamp to try to narrow in on my tone goal.

I should probably just learn to love this bass for what is is, and not what it could be, but I can't help but spend more money... It's a sickness.

Nordstrand probably has something. I know you can get their Big Singles in standard Dingwall size, you might be able to get something similar in an EMG housing.

I believe Sheldon can do his entire pu line in an EMG shell.


Nordstrand Big Singles will be a direct drop in. Sifi2112 is doing this to an ABZ but I haven't heard back yet.

We don't do single coils. To the best of my knowledge Nordstrands are the only ones that you can spec the right string spacing on - angling the pickup as much as we do makes for an extra wide spacing.

It doesn't hurt that Nordstrands sound fantastic either.

The website lists them as being 1/4 inch too long for a 5 string pickup, but an almost perfect match if i try to use a 4 banger.

Best bass gear has the nordie dual coil listed in emg shells... interested. Any other thoughts?
