Yamaha TRB 1006 Mods?

Hi there, was just wondering if any of you guys ever modded your TRB1006 - pickups / preamp?

was just wondering which ones would fit. Thanks!

I'm guessing many preamps will fit in the 1006 as for pickups, you can measure your dimensions and check against other pickups. I think your best bet for buying pickups would be bestbassgear.com, Nordstrands are great.

Dimensions are measurable fine, but what about the interstring spacings? The polepieces aren't exposed, no way to measure those and i'm new to this too, thats why i'm wondering if anyone else would happen to have experiece modding a TRB1006

I just bought a TRB1006 and noticed the pickups are very long.
Is there someone who has change the pu's in this bass?

I owned a TRB6 and it sounded very similar to my RBX6JM's stock sound (I am guessing that since John Myung played TRB's he used that sound as a model). I have replaced the preamp in my RBX with both an Agular OBP-3 and an Audere 4. The OBP had a lot of lows and smooth highs with a better fidelity than the stock preamp, but it did not quite have the midrange I wanted. The Audere is like playing through a window. It is 100% transparent, absolutely no coloration. Basically, any sound you make acoustically is exactly what you hear amplified. It is even more clear than the polyfusion in my Zon. Plus, with the 4 band and Z modes you can dial in just about any tone you want. If you are wanting a modern hifi tone the Audere is the preamp to get. If you want more of an old school round tone lean towards the Aguilar.

As for replacing pickups, Yamaha uses odd ball sizes, so it may be a difficult search finding a correct fit. Your best bet would be to get some custom made by Aero.

I have modded my trb1006 with a Audere classic 4 band pre and SGD Lutherie sidewinder pickups it`s made a lot of difference!!

I'll for that Audere preamp. I live in Chile so I'll see oaw can I get one.
As for the SDG pickup, captainhaddock, was this a custom job? I can't seem to find it in the sdg website. Also, did you have to make a hole for a swith and widen the slot for the pickup?

The pickups are a standard EMG45 size and then I had Dave at frets on the net make me a pair of aluminium pickup rings to cover the larger pickup route,the thing that looks like a switch is the LED for the John East low battery curcuit

for the last couple of months I had home made pickups in my TRB1006, but today I did another experiment that didn't cost a penny: I put the standard pickups in upside down. The idea came from comparing the pickup positions of the TRB1006 to the TRBJP2. On the TRBJP2, the pickups are closer to the bridge. The TRB1006 pickups have a "real" coil and a dummy coil (without magnet) for hum canceling. When I tapped the pickups with a screwdriver, I noticed that the "real" coil was at the neck side. By mounting the pickups upside down, it does sound more like the TRBJP2, indeed . A more tight sound, that fits more nicely into the mix. Luckily, the wires had enough lengths, so no soldering was involved.
I think I'm gone keep it like this for a while...

Wow! I'll have to look into that. The most simple way to change a bass's sound without spending any money. And it's reversible.

Beware, though, that you're careful with one the screws for the bridge pickup. The one closest to the volume control will be in the cable channel, so there's the risk of damaging the wires.
And, obviously, the 'Yamaha' logos are upside down, which looks a bit awkward...

Revive! I flipped the pickups in my Trb1004 too. Sounds way less honky. Definitely a huge tonal change. I can keep the EQ flat on the bass without dropping the treble off all the way.
