I've been able to check out the new Baer ML-112 speaker box on upright bass. Its one of the new "super 12" type boxes. I was using the box just for electric bass because other than my Berg HT112 I've had an issue with the boomines of many single 12 boxes for upright.
The ML-112 has a 6 inch mid speaker instead of a horn. One of the first things that floored me about the box was how great it sounded at lower volume. Many of the horn loaded boxes that sound good when pushed at higher volume sound weak and lack any punch at low volume, or when they aren't being pushed enough. There's so much information coming from the six inch speaker that I thought the box just might work for doubling gigs where I might start out playing upright for the more quiet tunes, then play much louder with the electric bass later on in the evening.
I took my trusty AI Focus head and my 1940's carved German round back fitted with a Full Circle, and decided to just check it out. Whoa!...... It sounded wonderfull at a low volume! The really amazing thing (for me) was that as I turned up the volume , it just got louder and louder..... with no feedback! I was standing about 3 or 4 feet in front of the box. The only adjustment on the amp was to turn the bass knob down just a touch as I brought the volume up....and up, and up.
I should mention that I'm not too into the old school big thumpy, short note sound. I like a more modern sound with a wide frequency response and a very responsive, quick feel off the string. This box can certainly do that with some eq adjustment, but I was keeping it pretty flat with the tone adjustments.
The bottom line here is that the Baer ML112 got about as loud as I've ever been able to get with my upright bass without feeding back, and it sounded great. It also sounded equally good at the lowest volume. I can't believe I'm saying this, but it killed my Berg HT112 in every way. Its larger than the HT112 but weighs the same AND I could also do a regular electric or upright bass gig with this box. Great product!
