Double Bass Resource for stylistic approach to different eras/composers of classical music

I was wondering if there was a method, book, internet resource, etc to learn how to approach different composers and different eras. IE, performing Mozart is different that performing Mahler.

This is a great topic/question! There is quite a bit of variance of what is expected from one period or composer to another, but keep in mind that all of that has the potential to go out the window at the whim of the conductor. Listen to recordings of some of the great works performed under different conductors and you might be astonished by how different they can sound.

I would appreciate having such a resource. The only book I have seen that discusses this in any practical way...as a player...is:

Orchestral Bowing: Style and Function by Jame Kjelland

Of course, the book is intended for any string instrument, so there a lot a examples that probably don't really work on the bass.

That said, there text discusses how notation is interpreted differently for each period and even composers. Best of all there are real example with comparisons in the common repertoire.

I go through the book occasionally just to refresh my bowing technique but find the differences among periods very interesting....and often difficult to do.

Thanks for raising the issue. Maybe this is an opportunity for someone to write a guide for the bass.
