Alright, attempting to build a PVC EUB!

My uncle and I are starting the process, a little at a time, an hour or 2 a day, to get this build process on the go.

Spoke with my uncle a few minutes ago, we should be starting the headstock today.
we plan on building 2 at about the same time, one is much the "formula" of the Beatcatcher's specs. The other one will be a variation of it.

My dad is a PVC fanatic. He's been working with materials like PVC, Lexan and so on for years! I have to turn him on to the idea of making one of these. With his experience working with the materials and all that, I am sure he'll have lots of valuable stuff to add.

But I gotta put a little chunk of time between my projects or risk becoming suddenly single.

I know the feeling of "time division", I was married sep 1st of 07, my 08 calendar, is filled with "sit in" gigs and running sound for another band the rest of the year, I'm glad she understands (plus it's estimated to be about an additional $5-6k for the year)

I thought about building an EUB once, and the most logical solution for a curved fretboard was PVC, but I never tackled it (I haven't built anything before). This is major inspiration and I bet I have friends with all the right tools... Keep us updated!

This is the "variation" from the "Beatcatcher" specs. He used an 1.25" for the main piece, This one is using 2" instead. I would make the comparison that Beatcatcher's was a 3/4, This one would be a 4/4.So this one will be about 6'+ tall, from headstock to the end of the peg

Some of the material needed, pvc of course.2",3" and 4".BTW, this is schedule 40 pvc

First things first, we started with the "headstock".1-3' cap, 1-3" coupling and 1-3" to 2" reducer.The other one will be 2" instead of 3".
Used a chop saw to cut the pieces in between, it's a bit more of a "true" cut.
This is the "mock up":

After "glue up", set on top of the main piece, which is a 2" piece, that will be used:

Next, we had to draw up an opening for the headstock:

A little more sharpened up w/ a grinder:

Had to do some hand filing to it:

Tuner "mock up",even thought about pointing the tuners to the "front, but liked it better towards the back:

This will be the 4" piece that will be used for the fingerboard:

This is what will be most likely next, once the headstock is 100% "good to go".

looks like you actually know what you're doing! awesome. are you going to use the entire 4" pipe for the neck, or will you use a slice of it (length wise) as the fingerboard on top of a thinner pipe?

The plan is, I was going to use a section of the 4". Cut it to about 36" to 38" long, 2 3/8 at the nut(about the outer dimension of the 2") and 3 1/2 or 3 5/8 at the base.
I'm still debating the scale length though. Open to any EUB luthier's suggestion though about scale.

But uh...not that it really matters but schedule 80 is thicker than schedule 40 and is usually grey instead of white.

It appears you are correct, isn't 80 used for larger diameter sizes too? it's more geared for pressure right? Coming from a HVAC background, didn't use 80, but used plenty of 40.

The other thing that I'm curious about is doing a stain (perhaps also a wood grain design as well) on it. Just not sure on the darkness on wood grain scheme yet either.

That's an idea. I would like to see it stay PVC personally, just for the sake of it! But, you're the one making it, so it's your discretion.

I made one out of a plank of pine in a couple of hours and sounds fairly decent. I should try to run it through some effects.

Yup, that's right about the pvc.
