So, I recently refinished/put new pups in/hand brushed (sanded
) the hardware on, because she was my first bass (her name is Oklahoma; she's the precision you can see below), and an old Silvertone worth jack squat. I like the sound of her now, and she's pretty playable still, but I've got a few new ideas. Here she is right now (beside her {step-}sister, Samantha [ignore the headstock on Oklahoma; I was just trying to think of something that looked like, or rhymed with "Fender"]):
Okay, so, in short, the truss rod in the neck now is at a crappy angle, and the adjuster in the headstock is completely stripped, so it's stuck at that back-bowed angle; I had to buy heavy gauge strings to help fix the bow, and it helped a good bit, but the action is still kind of high to accommodate for such.
So, my idea is as follows. I was thinking of buying this: http://cgi.ebay.com/BLUE-DOUBLE-STY...372?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item2c51b21d14 and replacing the truss rod with that new one, and defretting that neck. I will keep that neck for a later project. I will buy this neck: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] and put it on Oklahoma, because it is literally exactly what I want for the neck on that body. I will find a crappy body on ebay, or craigslist, and find some scrap parts, put the fretless neck on it, and have a somewhat homemade fretless, and a really good P-bass.
I can find a million different defretting tutorials online, and I have enough knowledge to put a mismatched guitar together. This is mostly to ask how hard of task it would be to do the truss rod thing. So, yes, typing all of that other stuff up was pointless.
So, could a very beginner builder replace a truss rod successfully?
