Custom Medium Scale Build: Muckelroy Content

After years of pining away for a custom bass, I found myself putting down a deposit with Brady Muckelroy. I had looked into several builders, but after the dust settled Brady's stellar reputation and the beauty of his past builds won me over. IMO, compared to many other custom builders, his prices and wait times cannot be matched(though as the word gets out, I expect this to change a bit. Get your orders in!). Brady is extremely knowledgable, and he will patiently work with you to figure out what will best suit your needs. Another VERY cool thing, he sends update snapshots of the build so that you can watch your baby take shape!

The bass I had in mind wasn't something super flashy, but a, active/passive workhorse with great versatility and classic good looks. Here are some of the specs:

Scale: 32" - Standard 19mm 4 string spacing.

Body Style: Bernal (Grabbed me the first time I laid eyes on it!)

Body Woods: Nicely figured Mahogany with a Birdseye Maple center cap/ on a Mahogany tone block. The Maple is flanked with Bloodwood stripes.

Neck: Rock Maple - 39mm nut width (right in-between a Jazz and a P)

Fingerboard : Birdseye Maple w/ radiused edges.

Headstock: 2+2 with a Mahogany cap.

Pickups: Reed James Custom ALNEO soapbars.(KILLER:bassist:)

The control layout will be will be a master volume (push/pull for active/passive), blend, tone, pickup switching (series/parallel), and 3 band EQ.

We are 4 weeks into the build (actually, just since I made a deposit!) and Brady is making great progress! Here are the pics so far:

Brady does some truly amazing work, and he's the nicest of guys to boot! You can't go wrong with one of his creations. Ask him to do a "demo" video of you axe, once he's done. You'll be amazed with his playing!

Thank you 3rdcurve and everyone else for the kind words & compliments. I wanted to invite any & all to "friend" me on Facebook. There, you can see the most current pics & videos on all things Muckelroy Bass! I'm happy to answer any questions you have about my basses, repairs, playing, heck anything music related......its where I live;-) Stay tuned to this thread & watch this bass come together.

That is looking great!

Is the head stock angled without a scarf joint? If so, any reason in particular for this method (pros/cons)? I was reading through the recent scarf joint thread in the Luthiers Corner and it sparked my interest in the subject.

Either way, great work!

* I have edited my original post. After speaking with Brady I have decided to add one of his custom preamps. He will be using a push/pull volume pot to switch between active and passive. With the EQ, pickup switching, blend and tone controls, it should be a VERY versatile bass!

Time for an update!

:hyper: :bassist:

So, after a slight hiccup with the custom pickups things are moving right along! Tuner holes reamed, logo burned, cavities routed, and neck attached. When I first seen the pic with the neck glued in I about lost it. It's amazing watching it take shape, but when I was able to see what I have had in my head for so long finally take a recognizable shape.....

Here be the proof!
