Incredibly Comfortable Jazz Basses from A New luthier

Played this 27 fret monster jazz hybrid bass the other day and it totally blew me away. I have always been a fan of the classic fender jazz bass but its not exactly the most comfortable bass to play for me. Went and visited Dave of Equilibrium Guitars and tried The Leviathan: a 34 inch scale , 27 fret monster and was blown away by how comfortable it was. I honestly didnt even notice the 27 frets at first until i started noodling..

Im having him build me a 38 inch scale, 6 string bass something like this so I can tune it to F# without having to get crazy custom strings. Should have a really nice tambre to it with that scale.


check it out guys. I know a few people on this forum would be interested in this sorta 4 string.

its ergonomic without that weird Klein look that i have never been fan of. Pretty darn nifty

To get the low F# on something with a 34 or 35 inch scale even the .145s are not tight enough to play anything very fast or to have a nice pronounced note. and DR strings. though marketed for basses with more standard scale lengths they wind the string all the way to the end rather than putting thread wrap so any of their sets will fit a longscale like this. Then i can have a bass tuned F#-G without getting some obscene custom wound .160 and then still having the tambre of the strings be simmilar to the sound of a monster truck tire going through a mudpit

Sadly the OP's title is misleading I feel. This is NOT a Jazz Bass and saying so don't make it so.

A Jazz Bass is a certain design, dimension and pattern as set forth by Leo of somewhat notable guitar fame.

One should be circumspect about brandishing the term 'Jazz" in reference to any other instrument shape, no mater how 'ergonomic' it is.

The DRs do taper a bit, but its far enough back that it still fits a 38 with the right layout of tuners on the headstock. as long as your taper isnt meeting the nut then its all got.

As for it not being a jazz bass. Well. jazz bass neck and nut, jazz style guard and control plate. Jazz pickups. Its most certainly modified on the design but even some of the fenders still under the name venture as far from the original as this one. Need we even mention those abominations of the late 80s that were comming out of japan? Still the jazz aesthetic, but everyone will have a differing opinion on that sorta subject. There are true purists that will argue that nothing past the 1964 are not actually jazz basses due to all the cosmetic changes. Others will say that The Marcus Miller is still a jazz bass, others that its not.

Circle K strings can accommodate up to 40" scale. Not super pricey either. There is at least one more manufacturer that makes long scale strings, but I can't remember them.

It's got pickups in a Jazz configuration, wasp-style body, etcetera.

And it probably has that sound, too.

You know, it's ok for us normal people to refer to a clone of a popular model as that model. Maybe that's too weird for you, but really stomping into a thread and declaring that it isn't so won't convince anyone. I am not sure when exactly you imagine you were given control of the English language, but hey, we're taking it back. Thanks!

Actually never heard of this company for strings. Thanks for the heads up tho. always good to know backups for stuff like this since we play all extended range stuff. low F# or drop to baritone E. [baritone bass? haha dunno what to call it offhand].

Looks like the definition of jazz bass debate has started, but as long as everyone checks out this guys site, im good with that. He is a super nice and super hard working dude. No automated machines, all hand done and he actually takes pride in making instruments to fit their future owners needs and wants rather than just what is easy.

I will include that im pretty sure even your buddy leo will tell you that the name "jazz bass" referred more to the tone of it than anything else. Im not sure if anyone else noticed this, but the Precision and the Jazz are very close in look and specs. A little change on neck dimensions and the body but this is far from being the contrast of something like a Gibson Ripper and an SG, or LP, or any of their other models. same with almost all other companies and their lines of basses.

Not an advert, i am not part of the company or anything, I am just getting word out about a dude who is starting out and making incredible quality stuff. I have a guitar made by the guy. The Elipsis 812 i have which you can see on the site, is one of my main guitars so Im doing my part to help someone out. Its sad that people have become so cynical and "too cool" for everything that they cant get excited about anything or see someone else being excited about something without somehow turning it negative.

if i posted "NBD" and showed some POS american fender with that god awful active system them put in things no one would have a problem.
