New Toy (G&L L-2000)

I went into one of my local music stores today looking for heads and cabs, and I somehow came out with a head, a cab, and a brand new baby.

There has been a G&L L-2000 hanging on the wall for about 6 months. I couldn't stand it, I finally pulled it down and played it. To my surprise, it sounded like crap.

Number one, the strings were junk from hanging on the wall so long.
Second, I had, and still have no idea how to set up the tone pots and switches.

One of the sales guys changed the strings and set the knobs (I wish I had payed attention because now I am learning the hard way, by turning knobs and flipping switches). Once he plugged it into the gear I was getting ready to load into the truck I fell in love with this thing. I play 5 strings, not 4, but I couldn't pass it up. A simple string change and a few minor tweaks to the controls brought this G&L to life. It sounds SWEET.

The neck is quick. The look is gorgeous. The sound is unreal. I am satisfied.

As soon as I finish drooling I will clean the slobber off the finish and take a few pics.

Congrats!!! I own a L2000 and love the damm thing.

Great necks and good electronics. The toggle in the back is passive, active, boost. Bass, treble, volume knobs. Series, parallel toggle and pickup selector toggle.

G&L website will have a good diagram I think on it.

I love the L-2000 I have..

I think the man got you covered. Just in case; you can control the height of the pole pieces in the pickups (with a hex wrench, they are screws). My L2000 has a great string to string balance due to this convenient feature.

A good way to try looking for tones in your L2000 is with the volume cut way back and the bass cut way back. Both to half or more. I also run mine in passive mode 99% of the time. With those hot pickups ,that cover a lot of string area, you can find a lot of vintage classic nuance (with the vol and bass knob set this way). But when you have the bass knob on full you'll get a thick, heavy,all out bass tone.

There is so much the L2K can do. I find that when I pick up another bass, that I'm considering buying, I end up saying "well my L2k can do this already".

Forward Switch: Simply a 3 position pick up selector neck only-both-bridge only

Middle Switch: Series or Parallel Switch (like Fenders S1 button) Think forward for Precision tone in series.

Back Switch: 3 position pre amp switch. back is passive, middle is preamp on, forward is preamp on with treble boost.

Go back to "Bass Guitar Forums" and scroll down to "G&L forums"; there is a sticky with links and FAQs and I believe the first link takes you straight to G&Ls control diagram.

I gigged with a Tribute L2000 for a long time. When I first got it, there sure were a lot of knobs! But I spent 15 minutes with the bass and the control diagram on a Saturday and that took care of that. Nice bass.

Nice buy. I went into a local store last week to pick up some recording gear and they had a black/maple L2K. Still can't believe I left without it. Right color combo, right neck.....if I could just figure out a way to justify needing a 7th bass...
