Squier VM Jazz as a 5 string?

i love the tone of the vm 70's squier jazz. but i was wondering if there were any 5 strings with that same tone/sound. any suggestions. most of the normal fender jazz v's don't sound like that

would this same sound be replicated using a 5 string jazz with a maple neck and duncan designed pickups? i don't think they make the duncan designed in 5 string?

i wonder if the soft maple body contributes to the tone. i can't find any 5 sting jazz basses with a maple body, alnico pickups and a maple neck. let alone one with the dd pickups

About a month ago, I posed this question to SD's tech support:

Question: I love the sound of the Duncan Designed bass pickups as found in the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass. Are these available for direct purchase? If so, are these offered in a 5-string Jazz bass pickup as well?

I believe the pickups you have are the offshore version of our SJB-1 Vintage Jazz model.
We make a 5-string version called the SJ5 67/70 model.

By his reply, I'm left to assume that you cannot buy the Duncan Designed stuff in the States. Thus, his referral to the models above. Also, if you are looking to drop these into a Fender, only the 67/70 length will fit (as told to me me by the same SD tech support gentleman).

How exact do you need? I mean a Fender MIA standard 08 is not bad a bad alternative right?
If you think the Fender MIA std 08 jazz is to "dark sounding", slap on a set of nickle roundwound strings or something.

im not good at describing sound, but if you have a vmj- turn all three knobs all the way up and thats it. its kind of a warm trebly-midrange. It really shines through the tube amps. for some reason most of the 5 strings i've tried sounded more like p-basses where its nice and round but not as punchy.

maybe i'd have to have a luthier make what im looking for. im just looking for suggestions next time i enter my local shop

Good EQ + Compressor = Fender transformed into Squier VMJ.

in theory, i would bet using the same woods and electronics would be pretty close.


of course you could get close using just a hipshot de-tuner

The increased mass on the neck makes the fiver a totally different instrument.
