Fretless to fretted

Hi, new member here.

Ive joined because I'm seeking some advice on a problem I have.

I currently play a fretless Warwick Corvette and I am very happy with it.
However I don't own a good standard fretted and I find myself needing a fretted bass 4 or 5 times more than a fretless bass.
I am going to Uni next year to study music with bass as my primary instrument and I think that I will miss out on many opportunities without a fretless. I enjoy playing teh fretless but I rarely play it live as I prefer having the 'twang' of a fretted in the music I play.
The other part of the problem is that being a penny strapped 18 year old I cannot afford to buy a new bass at the level of quality that the Warwick gives me.

So basically I want to change my frettless to a fretted. What would be the best way of doing this, new neck? or frets being put in. I have heard that putting frets in can warp the neck although I don't plan on doing it myself.
Any opinions would be very welcome..

Help Please.

I'll bite. My guess (I am not a luthier) but it will probably be a lot cheaper to buy a decent fretted bass than to have frets installed on your fretless. I may be wrong, but if you love playing your fretless and just want a fretted to get by, pick up an SX (From what I hear, they are great basses) and you can mod it up a bit for cheaper than adding frets to your bass.

Sorry luthiers, I am not trying to take coin from your pocket but it just makes sense. :hiding:

Peace,

Well My Warwick was around £700 although that was at a knock down price because I'm in with the store :smug:

I do own a fretted bass at the moment, an Aria STB series which is basically a shocking rip off of a fender P bass.

How much would a new neck cost?
