Hello everyone! Long-time lurker here. :ninja:
I've been meaning to purchase my first ever bass guitar for a while now, and after extensive contemplation I finally narrowed down my candidates to an Ibanez GSR200, a sparkly red Squier Jazz, an OLP MM2, and a Peavey BXP.

I knew that my next step was to carefully read each and every review I could find for each of these basses, then go personally test them out next month when I can visit a decent Guitar Center during my trip to America. (currently lurking in Korea!:ninja: )

Buuut....
I suddenly got some serious GAS for a green bass. :crying:
What's worst is where I caught it from.

I was so captivated and moved by this music video that I feel like I NEED a green bass right now or I'll die. I don't even know what model I need exactly because the bass seems to magically change every scene (general consensus is that it's some rare Japanese Fender P-bass). But that's when I stumbled upon an auction for this:

I'll admit my GAS is pretty damn embarrassing and impulsive, and there's no way I'd even be able to afford a rare Japanese Fender for my starting bass. But the green in this bass looked so damn good (even better than the one in the music video) that I knew I had to act fast.

I'll try to make this short now:
I've searched this forum, Fender's site, and google multiple times but I can't seem to find any bass in the same sparkly green color on any bass anywhere. :crying: Is it some super-rare, limited edition color?

I'd want nothing more than to patiently consider all my options when until I'm able to go to a decent guitar shop, but the auction ends in a couple days, and I don't want to regret missing this opportunity if it happens that I'm never able to find another bass with this color.

Does anyone (MajorMetal maybe?) know where I could get a cheap (<$300), green bass with a P-bass shape, like the one in the screenshots? I just know someone's got the answer! Thanks! :help:

Well I guess I'll sleep on this for now... hopefully the novelty will wear off and I won't have to live through this nightmare... :(

i used to have a custom jazz bass in a metallic green very similar to the p bass you posted, i loved it, had a great status graphite neck, the body needs replacing though due to a car accident that happened a while ago, think im going to go for a dinky jazz bass body from warmoth and finish it myself again.

Actually, Sedan Dad, I have no idea if it's even a Fender in that screenshot. Some people say it's a Lakland Bob Glaub signature, but I guess it was only inspired by a real bass, seeing as how its looks keep changing. (zexy bass btw, was it a custom paint job? :D)


Anyways, the closest I could find to its real-life counterpart was this blurry photo of a god-knows-what:

But DAMN! That SX sure looks pretty similar! It's just a darn shame that it's a J. :crying: I'm being pretty picky here, but I'm glad as hell there's a great alternative I can always fall back on. Thanks! :hyper:




Did you paint it metallic green yourself the first time, nickbear? I've been extremely impressed by some of the custom paint jobs I've seen here on TB, but the process sounds way out of my hands. Can any shops paint it for you? How bout Guitar Center? :D
Maybe I can just buy some chrome covers and work some magic...

So did anyone else notice that the E string goes under the E string then over the other 3?

Actually the neck pickup cover is one of the few things that makes it not a perfect representation of a 60s or 70s Fender P bass. I don't know how common green was (and certainly they didn't have metallic green. The thumbrest ismissing and of course the logo.

i did paint it myself with car spray paint. i did about 5 layers and in between each layer i lightly sanded to make sure the finish was even, then i sprayed laquer on the bass (a few coats) and lightly sanded the bass inbetween each coat again until i got the desired look i was after.. it turned out really well and shiny! i will see if i have any pictures. i cant take any now as i dont even have the body!

Now that my GAS has subsided a bit, I don't feel like I need the exact replica of that magic bass (thank god ).
As long as it's green and it looks good, that's all that matters to me now. :p

Btw, the screenshot's from Haruhi. I doubt many of you know it.. :(

All these great green basses I've missed... Though I never would 've been able to afford real limited edition MM's (I was considering OLPs!), I would have purchased a new green Fender had I been able to get into bass a few years earlier. :bawl:

Seeing as how the only green other green Fenders I've seen is that German auction (weird how the Squier has the normal Fender logo), I guess I'll have to go for broke on the metallic green Squier.....
Here's hoping it doesn't sound like ****...:crying:

And Nickbear, that sounds way too complicated I guess I'll have to ask around the shops for any custom paint jobs...

I had a bass that was the exact same color as the one you posted (the one from the auction). It was a Fender Stu Hamm Urge I. I want to say the color was "Forest Green Metallic" but searching for Urge basses they're always listed as something else (Green Sparkle or just "Metallic Green").

As for it being a special edition color, I am not sure. On the Stu Hamm Urge I it was a standard color for many years (it no longer is). On other basses, who knows. It may be that you could special order that color on any bass, but that color has long since been discontinued. The picture you posted with that color is the only bass besides the Urge basses I have seen that had that color on it.

I like the color alot, and the picture you posted is a very pretty bass. A P/J configuration is a great first bass, and if it's half decent, you will always be glad to have it around, no matter how far you go with your playing... If it is a reasonable price, go for it.

FWIW, if you waited around to find a used Stu Hamm Urge I in that color it would probably set you back somewhere around the $800 mark... Hope that helps.
