I remember seeing this years ago; much like guitarists do with vintage four-input Marshalls, this guy had two inputs on his SVT jumpered with a short cable, with the bass plugged into a third. What does this actually do? Advantages/disadvantages?

There are no advantages. In old Marshalls, each channel is voiced differently, so you get more gain and different tone when you junper the inputs. An SVT is already VERY high gain and both channels are voiced exactly the same. The only difference is that channel 1 has a midrange control and channel 2 doesn't. A bass amp that CAN benefit from it is the Mesa Bass 400/400+.

But what if you combine, say, a "Bright" input on one channel with a "Normal" input on another? They're not voiced exactly the same in this regard, or at least don't have to be voiced the same.

The difference between the regular and bright inputs is a single cap. The voicing doesn't change, they're still the same. You just have high end rolled off on the regular input and not rolled off on the bright. It won't hurt anything to try it, so if you're game, go for it. IME, there's no benefit at all.
