drug issues

well im putting togther a battle of the bands band and all is in place execpt the singer, which is who gets the most attention as we know so well. i got this friend who i go to highschool with and have known her my whole life whose a damn good singer. she looks like rihanna and sounds like aretha franklin (no exaggeration). shes only performed once to my knowledge as a back-up singer at a r&b show but ive heard her sing and she blew me away. BUT..........
Shes bigtime into drugs, were not talking a lil herb here were talking alota herb plus coke, heroin and meth sometimes. nobody else in my band touchs that stuff so idk how they would re-act

since this is prolly a one show deal (maybe only one song even) is it worth it to have her as our singer even though shes clearly a addict. i wish she would get help but i know she never will:(

Excluding someone because of a personal problem she has? I almost doubt she does heroin and meth... But i dont know her at all and i live in a bubble. I say let her sing unless she is high during the show (high on herb is ok though). My 2cents, if she is as good as you say............ (although aretha franklin was a joke at the obama ceremony swear-in, hope she doesnt sound like THAT aretha). Good luck in the show...

Best to let sleeping dogs lie... Despite her stated talent, I think it might be in your best interest to let that one go. There are a large amount of problems that could occur that could cause your band to be looked upon poorly due to her inclusion, not to mention the possibility of causing a rift between band members. I would say just stay your present course and do without.

well i know she does heroin cuz she nearly overdosed on it at a party and missed a couple of weeks of school and the meth ive heard about from others but it sounded like a one time thing.

and yea the obama ceremony was awful, im talking 1970's aretha lol

Even if she only sang one song there would be rehearsals which means an amping up of your involvement with her. Not a good idea if she is as messed up as you say.

No way to know if she would show up for the performance coherent or incoherent. I wouldn't take a chance on it no matter how well she sings.
Too bad really!

She's clearly an addict to you and your circle, but as long as she can make it to auditions and you're confident she can make the gig (you said she's into it but you never quantified it) then just make sure you keep it professional.

Lots of herb plus coke? keep it off the bus and you're fine. No bus yet? you're fine.

I've had 'Substance abuse' people in my bands before. It has never ended well. You might think they are pulling it together, but one day, they'll drop you in the sh*% bigtime. I had a spot on National TV booked, one time; the whole band was at the station, wondering where the guitarist was. I rang him....he said "Oh man, do I really have to be there?". I was stunned, to put it mildly. Most musicians would kill for those opportunities, but drugs kill not just your body, but your enthusiasm for life. If she is on heroin, it will be hard to believe anything she says, including her promising to be straight for shows. She will need lots of energy draining babysitting...Your call. Good luck.

I agree. One bad live show will be an embarrassment to the entire band and ruin your reputation. We did a show one night when our drummer (now ex-drummer) was falling-down drunk. Some of the people at that show have never forgotten how bad we sounded that night and will never come back to our shows.

i don't mind working with anyone as long as they're pro when it comes time for the gig. i've worked with insane drunks, potheads, cokeheads, what have you, and as long as they make the gig and don't drool all over themselves and play really crappy, i really don't care what they do.

except for heroin. that's a pretty big one. still, there are people who do heroin and handle it for a little while. artie lange comes to mind. of course he's out of action right now because he tried to kill himself, but it can happen that someone's on the horse and still keeps up their professionalism. but not for long...

ya, i might take a pass on this chick.

Okay, so you do one gig, it goes really well and suddenly people are asking you guys to play more and more... based mostly on the singer - the one with the drug problem... so now you're in a band, booking paying gigs with a drug addict lead singer. Female (which brings its own problems IME) with a drug problem no less... Trust me, avoid the drama and find someone else.

Hmm, let me think about that, NO. Not worth it.

You're the one putting this together, regardless of if money is involved or not, look at it like you are offering her a job. Do you really want to offer a job to someone with this level of problems?

If she was hiring you and there was a lot of money involved, then... well, still no.
