Double Bass What kind of stool is this?

the boy in the middle, with the folding stool...

does anybody happen to know what kind of stool this is?

it seems pretty nice, no?

I had a stool just like that. Still do, come to think of it - it's in my office now, used as a backup to my backup stool. It's pretty nice (they used to sell 'em at Target) for a folding stand, but I never felt really balanced on mine, as if I was always a little tipsy and in danger of getting too deep into something and then falling over. That may be because I like to have both feet up on a regular stool. One of the other things I didn't like about it is that there are no footrests on it at the height I like. The padding also got squashed down pretty quickly. I feel much more centered on a regular barstool with extra padding on top.

thats interesting. what height stool do you use? i use the two foot on the stool thing when i have to use a high stool, like 29" or so. i usually sit on a 24" stool with one of those target stool covers, which i guess puts me at 25".

how tall is the stool in the picture? how high is the footrest on that thing?

I think mine is 29" or so, but have never measured it.

The stool in the picture, if it really is like mine, is on the tall side, but again I've never measured it. The problem with the footrest on that on is that it's on the "front" of the stool, i.e. - if you were sitting on the stool without a bass with your feet on the rest, it would be well balanced. But when you sit with a bass, you (at least, I did...) have to turn the stool in order to get your foot around the bass, which throws the whole balance point of the stool off. With one foot on the floor, as per the picture, you'd probably be fine. But with both feet up, it's pretty tipsy.

For what its worth, IKEA makes a folding bar stool resembling this (as best I can see), and it is visually almost identical to the bass stool that has appeared in ads on this site. $29, and I hacksawed off 2" to make it just right for me. It's light, pretty compact, and has lasted a couple of years of pretty hard use. good foot rest, and I've never felt "off balance" on it.

but I was thinking about buying something similar to this and sawing off a few inches to make it the right height.

i like the way this looks cause it seems like you could fold it up and stick the seat side of the folded up stool into the music pocket on the back of the mooradian style bass bags.

i hate walking around with the bass in one hand and my wooden stool in the other hand.

the upton foldable stool seems okay, but its too tall, also, and i don't like seats without padding on the butt...which is weird, almost everybody says things like, "but then the padding became worn really quickly..." or "i had to buy a cushion for it..." when they talk about their own stools.

you'd have thought upton would have taken this into consideration, or maybe they will in the future. maybe they will also take those of us who use the smaller, 24" stools into consideration too.

Steve, is the Ikea stool the Franklin model?

It is, indeed, the Franklin model. I don't have a single bad thing to say about it other than it may have been made by Chineese slave labor, and sold by a man with shady WWll alliences. Good stool for bass though.

I used one of these stools for a long time...it was great that it folded up for easier transporting. Mine was quite short though (which I liked) and I fixed the no footrest problem by purchasing a classical guitar footrest (which also folded up). I put the footrest all the way up (or almost there) and set my left foot on it, with my right foot firmly planted on the floor. My end pin was only pulled out about 2 inches. I really felt relaxed and comfortable in this position...but now I am playing around with the Rabbath/Laborie bent end pin stuff...

I almost bought the folding stool at Lemur, but was
concered about some of the reports of it failing after
a year or so. Instead I settled on:

I just used it at a symphony rehearsal for the first time
last night, I got the aluminum model, its nice and light.
The cushion is really deep and comfy :) It isnt cheap
but it looks to be a good design.

Yes, IKEA has two variants of the foldable franklin stool. Either 63cm (25 inches) or 74 cm (29 inches). It is silver metallic with oak or birch tree. URL: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I know bassist using this stool, and I am considering using it myself. The seat is leaning slightly backwards, but I think this is easy to adjust by yourself with some wood and 2 screws.

Yes ive been using that Ikea stool at a venue i often play and i dont want to bring my own. The height is ok , but it is very slippery so it is almost impossible and uncomfortable to use it when playing for a long time.

Can anyone think of a way to make the IKea 1 inch higher? One possibility is appolsetering a 1 inch cushion (I just thought of that as I was typing this) because my custom stool is kind of bulky and I'm considering scraping it and making a new crazy rectangle stool. but if I could simply get this and put a cushion (or other means of raising it) that would save much time.

Sorry to come to the discussion so late. It's a 29' folding stool sold by Wal-Mart and made by "Wen's Champion Ent. Co." in Taiwan. Model number FSC-29. My wife has that exact stool and loves it. Unfortunately, it no longer seems to be on the market, either at Wal-Mart, Target, or online. She got hers in Louisiana about fifteen years or so ago. Has anybody seen a similar thing, cheap, other than the IKEA Franklin?

the problem with folding stools is that you really never feel very balanced on them. i've always felt like the joints would give out at any moment (although it's never happened). also, a lot of the cheaper foldables out there don't really have a great crossbeam for your foot, if you like to put one leg up while you play.
