work, work, work....

A friend and I have been working on a modest vacation house on a small lake about two hours from here. He isn't a musician, so he has been putting in more hours than me, but he makes more than I do so gigging defrays part of my half of the bills. Here are a few photos, mostly these were taken to document the process of building the deck around the house.

Thanks, jive. It's been quite an experience doing this. I've learned some carpentry, how to use a TIG welder, and quite a bit about building codes.

As far as shade is concerned, you are correct, but we try to spend most of our time on the water, or I guess in the water. It can be very windy out there at times, so having covered protection on three sides (four if you count the carport) will make a tremendous difference. I'm just glad the big jobs are over for now. I have to save my pennies so we can build a garage in a year or two.

wow. that deck's coming out really nice. are most people using metal now? i would've thought you'd have opted for wood. maybe i'm just not keeping up with the times... are you going to shingle/tile or paint the roof?

by the way, you're now obligated to buy a wooden rocking chair and have it outside so you can yell at those kids to get off your lawn.:p

thanks, it's been a lot of work and fun.

Actually the decking is a composite material made from resin and recycled wood products. It's Lowes version of Trex, called Choice Deck. No need to paint or seal it, virtually no maintenance, which was the key selling point, as it's not cheap. Edit: The roof is finished with pro panel metal, the same as the house, in fact we bought the panels the same time as the house. The panels on the deck roof run under those on the roof of the house, and we've sealed real well, and with a few severe rains this spring, it hasn't leaked.

Yea, I've already bought some kits to build some rocking Adirondack style chairs. No lawn, and I'm through with yelling, unless the vocal calls for it....

Ok, since I have no gigs this weekend, I'm out to the lake installing balusters for the deck railing. Went out last week for one day to paint, and help with a concrete pour for our neighbor. The weather has been heavenly this fall so far, so I'm hoping it holds for a few more days. Pics posted Monday.

Here are some updated photos of the somewhat finished deck. We still need to build the stairs/steps for the east and west sides, but it's quite a bit further along than the last set of pics.

From the out in the yard, the deck railing looks pretty good...

From on the deck itself... The bar was something that was headed to the landfill, before we rescued it. It has a marble countertop, and seems to fit quite nicely. We'll paint it when it's a bit warmer.

My friend had the front door sign made, it was cheap. They have Great Danes, and I think the fish is a bass so there is your play on words for the day... The other came from I know not where, but it speaks for itself.:smug:

Y'know, it is. It's nicer than my place at home. We got direct TV, a full (and I do mean FULL) liquor cabinet, 30 space wine rack (full), and if I can sell the basses I have listed here on TB, we'll have access to two power boats for skiing, boarding, and transporting lovelies to and fro....

My only issue is that my gigging schedule has tightened up quite a bit so I fear I won't be able to spend as much time as I would like out there. Still, it's a great place to get away to.
