Welcome to the Lakland 01's MegaThread!

This thread is for owners of Lakland Skyline Series 5501's or 4401's, soon to be owners, wanna be owners, used to be owners,
or if ya just want to see how the other half lives - you've come to the right place.

If you have glamor shots of your 01's put em up.

If you have pictures of your 01's in action put them up.

This thread is especially for those who have modded their 01.
Tell us what you did, show what you did and let us hear how it sounds and what it cost.

Plenty of LOG members have modded their 01's - welcome home!

For folks who like the club concept we'll call this the Lakland 01 Club.

For numbering let's try something different.
You assign your own number, either 1, 2, or 3.

For the rebels without a cause among us, if you just have to break the rules,
feel free to use any number, as long as it's in the Fibonacci sequence or a Prime number.

How's that for self-service! ;)

For those who need utilities, I promise you this club will have utilities.
Trust me.

I'll be Lakland 01 Club Member #3.
I like it!!!

This was BassPraisers idea (Big Ups to ya mon!).

Here are a couple links to the LOG MegaThreads:

Here is my former 44-01 and my 55-01 deluxe. Sorry about the large image for the 55-01 deluxe.

Let's get this party started right!!!:hyper:

Here's my unmodded 5501 I bought in 2005.

I've heard Skyline's refered to as Lakland knock-offs. Does this look like a knock-off to you?

5501.jpg

This thing is built like a tank. It will survive any thermo-nuclear holocaust.

The build, fit, function and finish are flawess.

The only weak point (IMHO) are the electronics. Others who share the same view have modded their's in various ways.

I'm currently leaning toward a US Bart pickups and a LH3 preamp or a Bart NTMB.

I got both a 4401 and a 5501...

Nubs, Nubs, Nubs?

What are we gonna do with you? :rollno:

#4455 is neither Fibonacci nor Prime nor a 1,2, or 3.

I am prepared for this eventuality,
though I must admit I did not expect to see it so soon...

Any 4 digit number that makes Lakland sense is acceptable.

Nubs, you are Lakland 01 Club Member #4455!

WELCOME & Congratulations!!!

Bought a new 55-01 from BassCentral a couple years ago, solely on what I read here on TB about them. Its natural w/maple board, added a Jeannies blk/cherry tort gard last year, looks cool. When I got it, it made me park my Sray 5, Cirrus 6, those 2 are gone now, -01 still here. Just bought a -02 last fall, it made me park the -01. Been trying to sell my -01 on Clist for awhile, dont think these TX yaahoos even know what it is. But no bites on selling it, so Hey I may mod it, that's what I need to do. So yeah lets here some easiest, cleanest, least expensive ways to mod this bass. Anyone have soundclips after mod, please post that. Will try to post a pic soon.

Can't wait to see that!

I have an 02 also. But my 01 is still the go to bass for Reggae and Neo Soul.
I get the nastiest dub sound from the front pickup and Lakland Steels.

But I think the preamp is weak and pickups are too dark and don't speak clearly enough...

Can I play? If so, I'm torn between 4401 and 13. Thirteen fits both Fibonacci and Prime, and the 4401 is the one I want....

Only recently got into playing bass after years of playing guitar off and on (details elsewhere, I won't bore anyone with them again), and in the past month I've pretty much blown my budget on amps, cabs and a second "beater" bass, but have decided for sure that my next bass is going to be a 4401 Skyline.

The first one I saw and held was a sunburst like nubs above. A local teacher owns it, but sadly it wasn't for sale. Now I'm torn between the sunburst and a natural finish. I'll likely not get the chance to actually play my future purchase as there are no dealers within a few hundred miles of here....

But tax refund time? I'll be finding one online! Anybody have any recommendations as far as dealers?

To be a member you either have to currently own or have owned a Lakland 01 bass.
You know, some experience...

Hmmm...

Feel free to pick a either number once you get your bass.

We see you've come to your senses...

If you want new I'd go with The Perfect Bass, ask for Brandt. He'll give you a 10% discount if you tell him you're a TB member.

Used I'd be keeping an eye on eBay. There are 4401's on there almost everday that have been barely used.

Also check TB's classified...

Here's my 55-01D that I got from a shop in Virginia thanks to a fellow TB'er Zooberwerx. I had Phil Maneri, a.k.a. Uncle Toad, drop some Nordstrand Big Singles in it and totally redesign the NTMB preamp, making it an 18v. Yet another thread to post more pics my same bass. I'll be #2 in this club.

As far as the cost of modding it, I shelled out a little over $400 for everything. That included the pickups that were $217, all the labor, parts, and rouing for the double battery box. Anyone living in Ohio, especially central Ohio, Columbus or vicinity, wanting some work done on your bass or guitar should hit up the Fifth Avenue Fret Shop and talk to Phil. He does great work!

Sunburst at sunrise!

Beautiful!

Do you know if your 5501D has a NTMB (not the MK1) preamp in it?

I know capnsandwich's did and maybe all 01D's do...

Thanks. I must admit the photo actually makes the finish look strange.
The colors are much closer to capnsandwich's 55-01D.

The pre is the original Korean pre-amp (the MK1, IIRC). No output
trimpots, no mid-adjustments, etc. When I bought the bass, I had
ordered a 55-01 Deluxe with a rosewood fingerboard from Gelb music
in Redwood City, CA (great place...Hi Ed!).

After a long wait, Ed Cagnacci, the bass guy there contacted Lakland
and found out that the 55-01D had just been discontinued. Ed had a
55-01D with a maple neck in stock and also a natural 55-01 with
rosewood fingerboard. Ed swapped the necks for me. I probably have
the "last" 55-01D with a rosewood fingerboard.

I have been tempted to upgrade (the electronics and pups), but as time goes
on I have grown fonder and fonder of this bass as is, though I think I maybe
will upgrade eventually, just out of curiosity, if for no other reason.

My Valenti fretless 5er has Nordy fatstacks and an Aggie OBP-3
Preamp. That combination is just killer, but I am open to other ideas.
Maybe the new Lakland electronics and pups? Capnsandwich's bass
strikes me as a great way to go, too. :bassist:

BTW-thanks for a great thread!!! :hyper:

Here is mine:

IMG_1615.jpg

Nordstrand Dual Coil pickups
Passive (volume, tone, blend)
1meg volume pot
Parallel/Single/Series switching for each pickup

I was really disatisfied with the MK-1 preamp and decided to go all passive. I'm a set it and forget it kinda guy, so I do all my EQ on the amp now and I am much happier.

The new wiring provides a ton of tonal variety. I especially like to run the neck pickup in parallel and the bridge pickup in series.

edit: forgot to assign myself a number: I'll take #3.14159265358979323846…
