why do the markbass cones move so much?

a cone that doesnt move doesnt make sound. lower notes cause more noticable movement (longer wavelengths that need reproduced). the louder you play the more noticable it is as well. you may notice it more than the standard black cone due to the coloring of mark bass.

all cones move.

+1. that's what they're supposed to do. as long as you don't hear the farting sound you're all good.

If true - then it's wasted energy. Try a rumble filter (high pass filter) in the effects loops. Maybe 40hz and see if it stops moving and doesn't affect your sound.

For example, at the Eminence.com site you'll see "Use a steep high pass filter" on their reference designs. I wonder if Markbass didn't think they needed it or even didn't consider it?

check out some of the dayton subwoofers from parts express in the home audio section but u will need to use a by amp set up as they are pretty much done around 400 hz maybe 1500 but they move more air than a swamp boat a friend of mine and i
built some cabs a while back with some 18s that had similar specs of this type woofer each cab was about 8.5 cubic ft ported down firing woofer and port
cant even begin to explain the sound or movment that eminated from these things
but he did have two 4x10 cabs to go with them i mean we had to put spikes on the bottom of the cab to keep the from them moving all over the stage good stuff:D simply gut wrenching

Brutal, just brutal.
I was always skeptical about drivers with the foam/rubber rather than the accordion style "surround?"
Do they really work well for bass?

if u use them for what they are intended for sub bass almost allways in a bi amped or triamped with x over .

depending on owow good the woofer is and box will determin what type of sound u get average x over point for woofers on the cheap side around 80 to 300hz adjust ill u get the garbage out dont expect them do do much good on the hi range but they will move u on the low end:bawl::bassist:

if u want to use them for hi ene freq use a smaller box but the smaller the box u need more power and a lot of thes woffers are rated at 150 and up allready also u can try smaller woofers like in the 8 or 6.5 rang these are sought after for there quickness and accurate reproduction of sound combined with some good ole slow movin 18s for subs 10 for woofer and 8 for mid bass = low distortion and kick ass full range sound but its alot of work:hyper:

That is strange...I've seen Madison Knight tens pushed to the max, and their cones did not jump out nearly as much as the Markbass,or Peavey sheffield 10s do...

Is that a good or bad thing when you have a driver jump out so far?

how many watts u putin to them if they have longer pole piecs
thay may be designed to move more depends how muchthe spider cone lets them move but this may be the case so that the same 4x10 drivers can move more air i like the mark bass sound sounds diffrent from say ampeg or swr they seem to have real good bottom but ive only heard them briefly are u having any kind distortion or banging out with them
