Three basses were stolen from a prominent Houston bassist this past week. The owner is a TalkBass member who asked me to post this because his computer was stolen at the same time. Cases were not stolen with the basses.

Music Man Stingray, pre-Ernie Ball. Black finish with white pickguard. Finish described as "chewed up." Maple board; 4-bolt neck; neck described as "screwed on too tight." Strung through bridge (not body). S/N unknown. Pictures below.

62 Reissue Fender Jazz Bass. Fiesta Red finish. Rosewood fingerboard, stacked knobs. This is an early model (circa 1983). Serial number is V005724. Easily distinguishable from the back of the body: (1) there is a routing for a battery compartment (a previous owner had installed active pickups; pickups are now passive and only the routing remains), and (2) there are autographs from George Clinton, George Porter, Jr., B.B. King, and Gatemouth Brown on the back. Below are pictures of Larry and his beloved Fiesta Red.

Arbor Explorer Bass. Orange Finish. Owner got silly and wrote "Bädäss" and "Blües" on the back and "E A D G" under the bridge.

If you have any information about these instruments, please PM me or email rfusillo (at) gmail (dot) com. Thank you for any help you can provide.

check all the pawn shops in the immediate area. When my van was stolen with my gear in it a couple of years ago. Everything was pawned 2 days later. but since the police were so slow at getting the data into the system most of my stuff had been sold by the pawn shop (not far from where my van was recovered) by the time I found it (though an email that had been sent to me by someone who had seen my stolen gear posting)

Also fax the stolen gear list to all of the music stores in town that you can in case the theives try to sell the gear there.

What part of town did this happen in? Got any pics of the gear in question. I'll keep an eye out when i'm hitting the pawn shops in my area

Good luck. I hate thieves. And what I believe that pawn shops should be regulated, all connected to a database, report serial numbers of everything coming in, etc... aren't they banks in the first place?

Seriously, the gear is likely to shop up on Craig's in a few weeks. I would set up some Google Alerts. I can teach you how to do that.

I guess my only question is why the HPD was auctioning items off that had been reported as stolen?

That's a really good question. It was actually a Pasadena police auction. I had been told by various people that I would need to be on top of this and to regularly contact the police on this matter or my basses would end up in some evidence room until they came up for auction

I guess they were right.....................

Glad the Jazz and MM found their way back home.
VERY fortunate the club owner cared enough to do
the right thing. Nothing short of an outright miracle.
I'd like to thank him personally. Most purchase irregardless.
Have heard number of horror storied here in Houston
gear/ pa being stolen from unattended vehicles including
one instance bandleader's duallie hooked up to a PA loaded cargo trailer.
Many yrs. ago, I had, after a Lake Jackson show, taken from a parked van
@ girlfriend's apt, a Trace 1048H, AH350X and three Peavey wedges.
With regular gigs booked, I immediately purchased exact replacement rig.
Week later I located the Trace rig in a pawn shop .5mi. down the street
from the apt. but had to "buy them back" even tho' theft report was made .
HPD sd otherwise it'd all have to come back to police impound and
would take weeks to clear for release...which I trusted slightly less than the thieves.
CONSEQUENTLY I NEVER TAKE CHANCES. Everything's documented and insured.
I now run a sound company with online security system, knines and strapped neighbors.
Houston- nuff said. The girl however, didn't make the cut.
