Yeah Baby!!! My custom 8 string is here (serious pr0n inside)

I'm proud to announce to completion of my long-awaited 8 string :hyper:

Meh, forget proud, I'm happy as a 5 year old :D

It's a custom built Jean&Jean 8 string, neck through, 35" scale, 26 fret tone monster with Delano custom pickups and Bartolini electronics.
Body is made of limba with zebrawood back and top, with bubinga neck and wenge fingerboard.

So here it is, in various stages of production:

17 mm string spacing, width at nut 70 mm, 120 mm at last fret.

The neck is super-thin (well, as it can be for an 8 string) and is really easy to play (i.e. much less difficult than I'd expected) considering i went from playing mostly four strings to this one. I'm sure that experienced ERB players would love it.

Damn, I thought nobody posted in this thread, didn't check it for a bit (checked the thread to bump it, to be honest, I though people around here were more into ERBs:p).
I'll post sound clips as soon as I get the strings from Conklin, so I can tune it the way I wanted (F# B E A D G B E).
For now it's B E A D G C F Bb.

Beautiful bass, love the body woods ... :D

TB isn't the most "ERB-friendly" place on the 'net but there are several regular posters here. Sooner or later they show up ... ;). If you haven't already done so you might want to check in at Link Removed to get into more comfortable waters, not a super active site but it has a ton of very good info ...

:eyebrow: that's not quite fair.

if you have a community of tens of thousands of active folks, like on tb, you're going to get all kinds of people, and more than a few of them are going to be jerks.

the fact that some jerks get the chance to spout their crap before i squash them doesn't make "tb an erb-unfriendly place".

in i'd say the opposite is true. there's no other forum near this big that has an erb'er like me as an admin, at least that i know of. show me another forum this size with rules specifically prohibiting slagging erbs.

Thanks :D
I guess TB is a better place to post this, because it's a broader community of bassists than the forum you've mentioned. Posting this bass in that forum would be like posting pictures of a Toyota in a Toyota forum, and I wanted to see what the Mercedes drivers thought about my Toyota if you catch my drift.

Rules to slagging ERBs should also apply to slagging every type of bass (Don't know if they do, haven't read them completely :D
I know about the "Bongo Toilet Seat" rule though).
If you weren't an admin would ERBs be bashed without much consequence?
Or the opposite, maybe they are being ridiculed because an ERB player is an admin, in some sort of perverted authority disapproval?
Anyway, who the hell logs onto a bass site to bash basses?
Nevertheless, back to topic:

oh, and that's a pretty awesome bass, bud. any soundclips available?
Thanks, soundclips pending arrival of Conklin SIT string for which I have to wait because I live in a $%#/&%/& fifth world country, not to mention what complications I went through to order them - fortunately Bill Conklin turned out to be one very cool and professional guy so we got that problem resolved.
For now, it's strung with D'addario 6 string pack + 2 Rotosound guitar strings (B to Bb) which are not wound so the tone isn't consistent enough throughout the range of the instrument.
So what happened to that PM I sent you 6 months ago regarding the construction of ERBs? :p

(no hard feelings I just want to know if it ever got there)

It's not really a fault of the mods or TB. In an ideal world, you wouldn't need mods to defend ERBs from slagging. With a lot of bassists being die-hard traditionalists and the interw3b breeding a new era of know-it-alls, all of whom are experts on your gear. :hmm:

Regardless, cool bass.

Well put John. :bassist: Viva Talkbass!

Not what I was expecting when I saw 8-String Bass. Beautiful instrument!

I can't imagine anyone Slagging an ERB. Especially one this stunning.

And doesn't this site seems to lean towards the 5-String as the instrument of choice. (Isn't that an ERB?) And I didn't realize calling a Bongo a Toilet Seat was an Insult. I thought it was more of a term of endearment. Isn't that like calling an Air Cooled VW a Bug?

Anyways, I love your bass, Mean People usually get what they deserve, and Closed Minds & Opened Mouths just seem to go together!

Thanks everyone for the comments :)

Well, you know the old "Jaco needed only four" ...

And I didn't realize calling a Bongo a Toilet Seat was an Insult.

Well if anyone called mine as such I would kinda take it personally because it insults my choice, not my bass, so I guess that's the problem people are having with bashing their instruments, could be somewhat compared to insulting other choices people make in life, job, partners, etc.

IT LOOKS AWSOME! But are the extra strings just loud vibrates? If a bass goes too low, its kinda hard to pick up on the actual sound,
I still need to check that low F# but the B is pretty tight, especially because I can choose to load it on top or thru-body.
As far as vibrating goes, yes, there are many more sympathetic rings then on a standard 4 string and I need to concentrate on containing those while playing because that is something I'm not accustomed to (I went from 4 strings to 8 and have some limited experience with 5).

Anyway I look at it as a feature, not a bug :D

J&J makes an incredible instrument. Congrats!

Indeed, check this one out, too:
