R³ Effects

Thought I would create a thread for effects that I have been building or testing on my breadboard. This not a commercial venture, just a hobby at the moment. What I do is search the internet or reverse engineer pedals and construct a clone. Once I have the effect going, I'll tweak it to my liking. For pedals designed for guitar, I'll change them so they are voiced for bass. For bass effects, I'll tweak them to get a different sound.

I started with a Woolly Mammoth clone and changed a couple capacitor values to allow for even more low frequencies to pass. But my version has the same problems as Zvex's in that it doesn't sound good with active instruments. I have the clone on my board but I plan on building another one that will work with actives.

Next was a two knob Tonebender. I never did get a sound I liked so I shelved it in the meantime. I plan on revisiting it and changing it to a three knob version.

I then built up a Brassmaster clone and had that project on my board for awhile until the error in the schematic was fixed and the pedal properly worked. I changed out a couple caps in my version for even better lowend retention. After building up the pedal I realized that it's above unity gain for almost all settings to I plan on adding an output volume pot to it.

Next was a Fuzz Face clone, the simple NPN circuit that's on Fuzz Central. Change some values I was able to get a version that retained lowend pretty well. I have a demo for it here: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7273091

But Fuzz Faces sound best when the fuzz is cranked and when that occurs with the above version the lowend is lost. So I started to play with the idea of a blend. I struggled with the blend trying to make it sound decent and finally arrived at a good setup. Demo of it is here: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7318898

There are some settings that do not sound particularly good as I as change the settings on it but I think there are some good spots where the pedal sounds great. I was able to fix an early issue of having it sound bad with active basses.

I won't reveal what I've "cloned" with my latest project but the demo of the work in progress is here: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7326985

It's a modern fuzz pedal clone with my own tweaking for the second half of the demo. At the end I switch between the two modes. I'd like some feedback on it.

Please note that I'm not obsessed with getting the EXACT sound of the original effect. Close enough is good for me, especially when you factor in the cost of the clone versus buying an original or getting a boutique clone. Most likely I'm using similar but not exact components for most of the pedals I build.

Future builds and mods include making a Boss DS-1 more bass friendly, modding my GGG-tuned Big Muff for even better lowend and working on getting a Cream Pie clone going.

has anyone made a bass fuzz with a blend that is a lowpassed signal? like a knob that blends in the clean signal, but only the clean signal below like 200hz?

that could be cool.

sounds like you're making some cool stuff.

Part the reason for me building up all these fuzz pedals is to get an idea of what I like and design a fuzz pedal or two. I have bunch of ideas right now including what you are looking for. It's definitely doable.

If I send you a picture of my Angler will you send me 3 clones in return for free? :D Joking aside, I really dug your Brassmaster clips in that other thread, and the Bass Face with blend sounds great as well.

Something I'm looking for and have no idea if any pedal already does this (although I have looked a bit), but I would love a Brassmaster-based pedal with a lowpass filter on the fuzz side of things.

not a bad idea. also, the gain pot you mentioned would be a VERY useful addition to the brassmaster

One of my ideas is the to have a fuzz that has a filter like option for which part of the signal gets the fuzz. So you could switch between have your lows fuzzed with clean mids and highs or mids and highs fuzzed with clean lows.

I am open to people either sending me their pedal so I can trace it out or send detailed pictures for those pedals that are to get, expensive or no longer produced. We might be able to work out an exchange that would benefit each party involved. Some pedals are just too hard to work out based on pictures so having it in hand to check continuity between components and measuring components values is very helpful. I'm great with a soldering iron and have experience with electronics. At work I've solder tiny surface mounted components and worked on a $20,000 piece of equipment wiring it up, testing and soldering on. So I (sorta) know what I'm doing and wouldn't damage anything.

Thought I'd throw that out there but I understand if anyone would be sceptical of sending their pedal off to some stranger.

Indeed it is, I'm surprised I haven't heard this idea before. I often use a chain that goes something like OC2-FX25-Fuzz-Filter, etc... But a fuzz with a lowpass built into the blend line sounds like the proper way of doing things. Id be very interested in one if you ever get around to it Rcubed. ;)

Someone had a photobucket page that had the Mammoth schematic along with a bunch of other ones but it looks like it's gone. Thankfully I saved the ones I was interested in to my computer.

I have a bunch of crazy ideas for fuzz but only a few I haven't seen implemented in someway on some way in a pedal. I'd just like to combine some of them for an "ultimate" fuzz.
