This is a poll to get a feel for the SX bass owners out there who bought an SX bass and either A) Had (as in needed) to mod it heavily to make it playable and to make it sound good or B) Enjoyed it out of the box other than a simple setup.

My SX BG-205 is stock from the day I bought it five years ago other than a setup.

--CLARIFICATION EDIT--

I appreciate everyone's input and voting so far, however it has come to my attention that the poll question needs to be clarified.

The poll is asking if you HAD or NEEDED to modify your SX bass to make it playable and sound good. It is not asking "DID" you modify your SX bass simply by choice or by volunteer decision. It also is not asking if you bought your SX bass with the intention of modifying it the moment you purchased it.

Simply put the poll is asking if you were forced, without choice, to make mods to your SX bass beyond a simple setup (that all basses require) in order to make it even playable or sound good. Otherwise you would have to return it or sell it because it is virtually unusable to you without said modifications. Modifications such as "My SX bass pickups sucked and were completely unusable so I had to swap them out for -blank- pickup brand before I could gig with my bass!" qualify as a vote. Other qualifications for a vote are any similar *required* mods you were forced to make such as fret dressings, neck swapouts, bridge changes, etc. Make sense? Thanks!

Don't get me wrong, you are more than welcome to share that you modified your SX bass by choice in your replies to this thread. In fact, I would invite those replies - I love to see how people have voluntarily modified their SX basses. However please make sure you vote in the poll appropriately and correctly. PM me if you need further clarification. At the time of this edit, the majority of TalkBass SX owners have not needed to modify their SX bass to make it playable and sound good to them.

Thanks and please continue voting and sharing!

It was playable, especially after a setup.

The only big mod (pickguard and pickup cover don't really count) that has been done is new pickups, and quite frankly, they haven't made a tremendous difference.

my P bass (oldest SX) had a wonky pickup. It worked but just didn't seen "right". It was replaced and thats all the bass needed. (the BadAss bridge and string through conversion were an afterthough and more for asthetics)

My SX Jazz bass is stock with only a neck and pickguard swap. From the stock SX neck to an SX block neck and the white pickguard was changed to a mirror one. Both mods were done for looks only. Bass was completely gigable in stock form.

My new SX PJ bass is still in tweaking (setup) stage. Looks wise it will probably not get any mods. Pickups seem fine. I may take it to the local Guitar doctor and have a real "pro" setup on it done just to see how much better he can do it than I can.

FWIW, i count strings as consumables and not upgrades, since they are more a personal preference than anything.

To cancel the Hum on the Jazz pu's run another ground wire to each pu.

I have had 6 SX basses ALL have been Great. Very playable out of the box. Of course you will set it up to your liking but you would do that with any guitar.

The P basses in particular are excellent the pu's are real nice in those.

I sold my Fenders and My SX P Bass and my SX MM4 are my main players.

The short answer is no. I didn't need to modify the bass in any way for it to sound and play decent. It played and sounded fine after an initial set up.

Over the course of time, I have made some upgrades/"mods" etc. to it to fine tune it to my personal preferances. I would have done the same to any Fender MIM Standard (at 4 times the initial cost) as well to REALLY dial it in to my likeing. I'm even consiedering upgrading the P/U in my MIA American Standard 'cause it isn't quite there IMO.

I also guess I have to include the pickguard and knobs, but those again were just a cosemtic upgrade to suit my personal preferances.

Any mods and tweaks were spread out over a long period of time, and a good chunk of it's gigging life was in basicly stock for, save for the pickup. (wanted a 60's tone where the stock resembles more of a 70's P tone IMO)

All totaled, I'm still under the price of a MIM Standard P, and have a bass that suits my needs far better.

I just had to do a routine setup on mine(lake placid blue jazz).Trussrod tweak & intonation.

The strings that came with it sounded nasty too.A string change improved it 100%.

I did change the pickups but the originals were O.K. A little bland for me but very useable. It really blended nice with an acoustic duo I played with. I had some DiMarzio Ultra's lying around & I'm a Di Marzio kind of guy.The old pickups are doing duty in a friends no name Jazz copy. He likes them fine.I put a tortise pickguard on too. It's looks great & you would swear I dropped big bucks on it.

It seems SX gets better & better each batch.Seems most guys play theirs unmodded.

I got an SJB-62 Lefty LPB 2 weeks ago. Its my first bass, and once I stopped using the drum sticks on it...

Actually, I was getting a lot of fret buzz on the E and A string, open or fretted. I played around with the saddle height, but that resulted in a stupid-high action, and even then I was still getting some if I was playing around the middle of the neck. So I took about 1/8 turn out of the truss rod last night, and immediately it was playing better. I must say though, getting to the adjust was a bit difficult, I recommend a long T handle allen. Anyways, most of the fret buzz was gone (the rest is probably just due to my sloppy technique). I'll check it again today, and readjust the saddles.

I will say Im still having a heck of a time getting the intonation right, but again, it could just be that Im a n00b.

Got my first SX the other day. Took it out of the box yesterday morning. Slight tweak to the truss rod. Played it at our gig last night and it sounded great.
Couldn't be happier.
Let's keep this SX thing our little secret, shall we? I don't want Rondo to get all Fender-Price-Crazy on us.

mine did need a few things done right off the bat. The bridge made a really gross metallic "ping" sound anytime i played the D or G string, and no amount of adjustment would make it go away. Swapped it for a Gotoh and the problem was solved. Also, within the first two weeks of owning it, the nut cracked at the E string, causing the string to rattle a bit when played aggressively. Also one of the pots was pretty scratchy... so i just went all out, bought a Nordstrand pup, bayou cables wiring harness, some new knobs, new pickguard from Rondo (only $10!), new string tree to replace the terribly tight slots on the old one... took it to a tech to have the pup and harness installed and had him give 'er a good setup and install a bone nut.

Short answer... did it need all that? NO. Did it need some stuff out of the box? YES.
