So recently, I picked up a Euro 4LX with a natural oil finish from ShawnStones here on Talkbass. I had decided to pick up a used Euro (which are a bargain IMO) to customize into the Spector I wanted.

Here are the changes:

New finish - Gloss Tobacco Sunburst from New Orleans Guitar Co.
New Hardware - New black Spector bridge, Schaller M4 tuners and Schaller straplocks.
New Pre - I'm keeping the EMG PJ set in there, but want this bass to have boost/cut control on the pre. That means a "tonedump". Deciding right now on an EMG 2 band or an Aguilar 2 or 3 band.

So far, here are some pics of the bass from Shawn's for sale thread and some phone pics of the bass in the spray booth. I'm going to bring my camera over for some better shots this week.

i'm giving my oiled euro next week away to get [Invalid or Expired Link Removed].

where did you get your black spector bridge?
i want to replace the golden hardware with black one too!
did you have to drill some holes for the schallers?

luckily the bass has a aguilar obp1 installed :)


although, looking forward for your picks :hyper:

OK, why are the pics showing up for me but not for you guys?? I have them posted on a Kodak Image Gallery then copied the image location between
. Right now looking at the thread they show up for me????

The black Spector bridge came directly from Spector. Just give them a call.

no, i still have problems seeing the pictures. maybe it is password protected or something..

i wrote an email (a call would cost quite a few bucks from germany) and they said they send a copy to the european manufactor. but that guy never contactet me.

Here's a story/question about the natural oil finish:
I play Spector Euro 4LX. I have two (for different tunings in my cover band). Anyways, I used to have a natural oil finsh but didn't like the sound. Not having the polyurethane (or whatever it is) really makes it sound different (brittle). My cherry finish Euro sounded much better. So I traded the natural in for an amber and it sounds great (like the cherry).
Has anyone else noticed this with the naturals?

I'll be kind of curious to see the difference. I originally had an all maple SSD NS4CRFM that had an oil finish that sounded fuller/thicker than my friends with the gloss finish. I think it sometimes just depends on the bass and that piece of wood,etc.

Yeah, could be.
I had read about guitar players sanding the finish off their Les Paul bodies to get a brighter sound and always kind of dismissed it but my experience with my oil-finish Euro made me think again.
I taked about it with Spector customer support and they said the natural oil basses do have a brighter sound.
But yeah, that may not have been the only factor.
Anyways, I'd be curious as to how much the refinish changes the sound.

Wow, that is a cool finish idea. I love white Spectors but I've never seen one with the wood down the center kept natural. You better make sure to take some pics of that for everyone!

i considered a complete white finish too, but then said to my self: if you pay that kind of money, it has to be unique.


lets hope the sound doesn't change. but otherwise, the highboost is always at zero ^^

That will be one of the most unique ones I've ever seen. I wanted a Euro LX and I wanted a tobacco sunburst, so figured this made sense. THere was a one off at Bass Central, but I didn't care for the matte finish or the particular, so I figured I'd just get a used one (and be able to make all the mods and new paint job less than a new one).
