are flatwounds too mellow for rock?

when i hear flatwounds i think jazz, funk styles. i was hoping to put some chromes or elixers on my jazz build. i play mostly light rock but was thinking i groove on the low end, thus flatwounds. i love rock bands with a bass groove...

any tips?
or other string suggestions?
i normally play medium gauge but am open.

Haven't tried flats on my Jazz (yet :D), but I'm currently experimenting with a set of Chromes on my new USA P-bass V. I just put them on a few days ago and they definitely sound good. They keep enough brightness to sound great in rock/pop/funk stuff, but man... palm mute and it's the closest I've heard an electric bass come to sounding like an upright. :D

Also, I don't like Elixirs at all. I had an Ibanez SR535 that had a set from the factory and they felt sticky. Maybe I just got a bad set?

I'm still deciding on the Chromes, but they'll probably stay on the P-bass. For the rest of my basses, D'Addario EXLs... it's the sound I like and they've never let me down yet. :)

+1 for Chromes on Jazz!

You might want to start with something a bit lighter than the ones you're talking about, though, if this is your first time to use flats. 50-105 may feel a little too stiff if you're not used to flats. I would suggest maybe 45-100 to start out with.

I personally use 40-100 on my jazz and love them!
