Hey Guys

i was talking with the members of my speed metal band, all two of them

and we decided for fun to "make" the best instrument for speed metal, so my drummer made a diagram (on a burger king napkin :p) of his drum kit and on paper a list of its components, double kick pedal etc....

guitarists Designed a guitar H-S-H configuration, basswood, all maple bolt on neck

we agreed on that, and mine just said P-bass esque bass, with split coil, preferable hum cancelling and ceramic, so basically a P bass or a Yamaha Attitude! (best bass in my opinion, its 100% right for me!)

and my band mates disagreed, with me and each other, the guitarist (typically....) said hum cancelling quite single coils, he said a modded J style is all you need and the drummer said Active double Humbucker bass, like The Musicman Bongo is the way to go

out of those three who would you a agree with?

Me: Split coil, P-bass, Attitude style bass Hum Cancelling
Guitarist: Jazz bass style bass, Hum Candling
Drummer: Bongo Musicman double Humbucker active style bass Hum cancelling

who do you agree with?

also i'm welcome to other suggestions, we are all happy with our gear now, with same guys i we have a rock band with a different name (hard rock/ metal)

so this is for speed metal only 100% of the time

what is your say?

Regards
Adam

I was using my SRX390 (dual active humbuckers) in a 3 piece speed/thrash band. Money was tight recently and i sold it. I brought my Jazz to practice and it was instant awesome.

The P is nice. Good even, i just thought the jazz cut through better and i like the faster neck.

Also... whattabout a Ric?

I think a PJ bass would be a great fit, I kind of prefer Ps to Js for aggressive rock tones but the bridge J pickup will give you a bit of extra bite that's sometimes needed to cut through better, provided that it is hot enough so the P pickup doesn't drown it out.

I admit that this is the first time I've seen someone describe Motörhead as speed metal, though. ;)

As the other guys have said Lemmy played a Rickenbacker but I'm 90% sure that Juan Alderete played a Jazz bass with Racer X so it depends mostly on how you play and what rig you're playing through.

The P-Bass or Rickenbacker would probably be ideal for the punchy sound that they provide but again it's all down to your preference.

He did, and I've seen Paul Gilbert do Racer X stuff with a bassist with a Rickenbacker, with a P pickup.

Anyways, really all you need is an agressive sound, any of your options will do, just pick which feels best to you.
