53 Precision NBD

WOW! Great find!

I have a 1953 P and my neck was made one week after yours. Interesting that your truss rod nut is straight slot whereas mine is Philips.

I'm not sure about your pickup though. Doesn't have black string wrapped around the coils and the magnets are raised for the A & D and the E & G. Mine are flush and all the old SCPBs were flush.

(Mine is 100% original except for the phenolic saddles. About a month ago, I replaced the original pots and cap although I kept them. After 73 years, they were pretty bad. Hated to replace them but the pots were not working very well.)

Well done, OP. We welcome TB's newest slabebrity.

The dates & initials look proper to me.

As @Salicete suggested, rotate those covers. If it were mine, I'd source a bakelite pic [lacquered, of course], some replacement fiber saddles [while keeping the originals safely stored], as well as a proper decal. But that's me.

You can find the perfect replacement saddles from this highly recommended seller here:

$8K? 😲 Are old Fenders really worth that much? I'm out of touch apparently.
Local we have 60s Fenders people wanting up to 25000 Can Dollars...18000 USD

69 Mustang $6500 Can

Adam Clayton $4300

1962 Jazz $30000

64 Precision $15000

and so on....Custom shop 5200 bucks and 70s Precision 5100 bucks....and on and on

The world has gone mad

Used Professional II basses for $2200 everywhere

I was having a hard time selling my Pro Precision for $1400 Can minus store commission ..$1080 for me

Store has a 60 something P for $12000

Landed. Thank you all for the responses. And especially for the photos, links, and hard data.

Here's the story...

About a month ago I was playing an outdoor jazz set just across the border in Sarnia Ontario:

Sarnia's Sounds of Summer, and all that jazz | The Sarnia Observer Sarnia's Sounds of Summer, and all that jazz: photos

After our gig, a gentleman came up and introduced himself as a fellow bassist and said that he owned the used record shop across the street. Would I be interested in seeing a '53 P bass that he had for sale? Of course! Galaxy Records on Mitton Street in Sarnia is a very well stocked store and if you happen to be in the area and are interested in this sort of thing, it warrants a visit.

Up from the office below came the familiar Fender case and voila.. the bass in the photos that I posted previously.

This bass guitar did not belong to the store owner, but he had purchased it from the family of the person who had owned it since the late 60s. According to him, the bass was essentially in the same condition as when it was initially purchased by the previous owner. That is, refinished and missing the pick guard.

At some point the original pickup died and was replaced. But the guy had the foresight to save the original pickup, which is the one with light colored twine wrap. He also replaced the bridge with a later Fender 4 saddle bridge, again and thankfully, saving the original bridge. I plan to reinstall both.

When the store owner received this instrument, the original frets were toast. It had never been refretted. He made out well enough on the deal that he was able to have a professional refret done. So now this bass plays amazingly with nice low action. It's currently wearing a medium gauge set of round wounds, but I will probably eventually change these to a low tension set of flats. It plays and sounds like a million bucks.

Case candy... As a sign of goodwill, he gave me three boxes of Bass Player magazine, which I believe is the entire run of that magazine...I have yet to check, but it appears that is the case. Also included was a copy of Standing in the Shadows if Motown, autographed by the author and with extra pictures included. And last but not least, a cd of the previous owner's blues band, which I plan to keep with the bass.

I'll be headed back over in two weeks to play at the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion, and I will absolutely be toting this bad boy!

Perhaps some of the truss rods were replaced.
No. The single slot was in use first, and the criss cross came in quickly after.
Thats a legit neck.
And the headstock decals were simply water slide decals that sat ontop of the finish. They could easily be scratched off with a fingernail, and some even fell off in humid climates. The decal on my 64 is intact with only a couple scratches in it.

That thought did occur to me. I once owned a 67 Precision, and the head stock detail was indeed very fragile. And this was in the middle 1990s.

That is a fantastic story. Wow! Good luck and enjoyment with all of it.

Looks great. I'd leave without a pickguard, looks better that way, IMO.
We will have something new to talk about the next time I visit Cleveland!
Take the covers off...Looks so cool on the CD cover!
Possibly at some point. Lately, i've been kind of digging playing basses with these covers on. I've become interested in learning how to adapt to existing conditions.
