Best 412 neo cabs for prog metal

The Aguilar 4x12's aren't neo cabs. But they are lighter than most 4x12's anyways at only 116 lbs and are, IMO, the best speaker cabinet ever made. :D

Mesa makes a 4x12 and I'm not sure if they still do or not, but SWR and Peavey used to make them as well.

There is absolutely no reason to go with a 4x12 specifically for metal. :) Nothing special about a 4x12 or an 8x10 or whatever.

You should go with the cab you like the best after trying a bunch out and researching - not pick a form factor and settle on that.

The guy is obviously interested in information on 4x12's, why post some generic and pointless b.s. about "trying out all of the cabs within a 1000 mile radius and pick the one you like"? That doesn't help him to narrow it down since he probably doesn't live next to every bass cab manufacturer in the world. :scowl:

I didn't get the impression he was choosing a 4x12 (or 8x10) specifically because everyone else is doing it either. I'm only pushing the Aguilar GS412 because I honestly think it's the best cabinet out there - volume, great tone, easier to move than most 4x10's, durable, and it just looks sweet. Which are absolutely perfect reasons to go with it specifically for metal! :D

You could always go modular and stack 2 212 cabs for a 412 rig. A pair of Genz Benz NeoX 212T's would probably fit the bill nicely. They are 4ohm cabs so your head would need to be dual 4ohm or mono 2ohm capable though.

It's not generic or pointless, it's simple good advice. Wanting a 4x12 because you want a 4x12 is stupid. No 4x12 is going to sound like any other 4x12, all companies use a different design strategy, different drivers, different tuning, different box sizes, et cetera. Nothing about a 4x12 is unique.

The GS412 is a nice sounding cabinet, but really sounds nothing like the Schroeder. Nothing at all. Completely opposite ends of the frequency spectrum.

I *did* get the impression he was wanting a 4x12 just because he liked the idea of it, and not because of lots of experience with varieties of cabinets, because he posted two cabinets with completely opposite profiles, only one of which is really appropriate for your standard low tuned metal (schroeder for drop tuned music is practically begging to replace your drivers regularly).

I stand by my advice: Go try out a lot of cabinets and do some research. you'll find that a mass market 4x12 is a petty poor form factor for a cabinet in general and not really any louder or lower than a quality custom 2x12 with enough juice pushing it (which will wind up being cheaper than any 4x12 too).

For what it's worth my favorite 4x12 is the SWR 12stack - it's very portable, far smaller than most out there, and sounds amazing with distortion (due to not having a horn). If I had to pick a second I'd go with the Berg NV 4x12 just off word of mouth.

Mesa makes a 4x12 bass cab and it's loaded with Neodynium speakers. Every Mesa cab I've played through has blown me away and the brand new ones are no exception.

I had the opportunity to try out a Mesa M6 Carbine through a Powerhouse 4x12. Holy crap. That setup destroys. Absolute rock n roll, man.
As always, the best advice is to seek out and demo the stuff. Let your ears decide.
