Burgundy Mist vintage P-bass build project

So.. found this picture of a restored/refinished vintage '60 P-Bass in Burgundy Mist. I've been wanting to build a P-Bass for a while and always planned on a color from the Sonic-Blue/Surf-Green spectrum, but when I saw this picture I flipped, so Burgundy Mist it will be!

Ordered the alder body below from Warmoth - nice and light (4lbs. 8oz.). FYI - got a great deal with their ongoing 20% off sale on in-stock bodies.

Planning this project to vintage specs as far as possible. Body finish will be nitro from Re-Ranch with a matching headstock. Base coats will be yellow-dye/vinyl sealer/white primer (see this post for a nice writeup on vintage refin steps).

FYI - expecting this to be a slow build project, picking up parts along the way. Will probably order a [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] - have it on good advice their necks are exceptional and they offer real clay dots.

That's it for now!

I have had very similar interest in a Burgundy Mist project myself.
I've had mine spec'd out for quite some time after seeing a similar Jag body.

Is the Re-Ranch nitro considerably better than the Warmoth finish?

What about a '54 with a rear route cavity? All burgundy, no pick guard... Mmmmm...

Looking forward to the results! Cheers!

I've never seen a Warmoth finish, but I'd guess they are very well done. But it's an extra $200+ charge, and I'm into doing the finish as part of the project. Also gives me the chance to make it a full vintage finish (i.e. yellow-dye, vinyl sealer, nitro color) rather the modern type finish available from Warmoth.

Going for the pickguard myself. Did Fender offer a rear route that early?

*very* nice! What were your re-finishing steps? Did you use ReRanch for the color coats?

Yep, it's Reranch color. Just follow their advised steps and you'll be fine. :)

I'll be watching this thread. I'm getting ready to do an early 60's P replica, and was going between Burgundy Mist, Inca Silver, and Dakota Red. I was leaning a bit toward BM, but if you're doing a cool P in BM, maybe I'll go with Inca. Hmmm....

No way! But it's more Burgundy! Personally my preference.

I'm into doing the finish as part of the project.
Oh. Gotcha. Missed that part originally.

Hey DarkHorse: Was that an original Jag body? The edge route looks pretty uniquely sharp. Great looking bass!

Don't really know Inca Silver, but I dig Dakota Red. this post on a '66 J-bass refin is what really got me thinking about doing a vintage finish myself.

If you're into red in general, check out this post on a truly stunning Dakota-like trans red.

Hey Tonebrulee...you will love the paint. If you use the RR primer, one can should do the body and headstock. I always order two, just in case a bug or booger shows up. Good lock with the project..like you said..not many around like that.

Cheers.

Hey Instagator - thanks. And nice job there, and a cool idea on the P-bass Deluxe with a J-bass body.

How many coats color/clear did you shoot for that job? Any special tips from your experience with the RR rattle cans?

I only used one can..sprayed in all directions..up and down..side to side than diagonal.I used Preval spray bottles loaded with McFaddens Clearcoat.Check LMII's site to get the mix ratios or just use ReRanch clearcoat in the can.I believe it's the same thing.Check out the ReRanch forum for any questions..alot of helpful folks over there doing great work with rattle cans.

Cheers.
