ampeg svt pro 4 queston

Being as the ampeg 8x10 can handle 800 watts and its the biggest cab they make and the svt pro 4 puts out 1200 watt will this blow the speakers? i currently have a ampeg 8x10 and a ampeg svt classic head but iv been thinking about selling it and getting the svt pro 4 for my 8x10 cab i like the tone of it a little better. so anyway being as the head puts out more watts the cab can handle will it damage and blow the speakers?

Would the svt 4 be louder than the svt classic being as its putting out more watts or would the tubes in the classic make it louder? Also which would give me a better overdriven sound? I was thinking if I overpowered the cab it would give me a better overdriven sound but I'm really worried about blowing th speakers hmm

Over powering speakers is a bad idea. The distortion from speakers themselves indicates they have exceeded their power limit and the the voice coils are heating (leading to failure). Speaker distortion on a bass=really bad idea.
If the ss pro4 would be louder is possible, but the power will be "cleaner" longer so it won't seem as it is. We perceive distortion as loud faster than an undistorted sound.

well im just looking to get a really tight solid overdriven sound more i am doing a band with me on bass a drummer and a singer and i hate my bass tone in our songs and being as it is fast agressive music i need some sort of a good overdriven sound but still sounds clear and you can hear everynote i want to basicly make it sound like im making up for a guitarist but still have that awesome low end. i dont know what to do anymore

You might be better off with a tube amp for a clear and overdriven bass tone. The 4 PRO is clean sounding and can sound growly with roundwound strings - but no tube growl/overdrive.

The Tech VT bass pedal might give your bass the needed edge while keeping the clarity. Don't give up! Keep trying out as much gear as possible. Keep an eye out for what your favorite bass players use on stage - that is the gear to pursue. No matter what a bassist did on a recording - figure out what he/she uses live and you can get pretty close to the tone they have.

That's a really bad idea. You're way better off getting your OD from a pedal or an overdriven tube amp. Actually, if you want to use an overdriven tube amp, you're way better off using a much lower wattage tube head. At such high volumes, clarity goes out the window. Even a 100w tube amp head can be screaming loud when overdriven. That's why I prefer to get OD out of a pedal. The VT will cop the Ampeg overdrive sound to the letter, but there's other pedals out there. It's really your best bet, unless your whole thing is making people puke over the volume, in which case your tone really doesn't matter.

Well we know with this band we want to be really loud haha. like I'm in the prosess of getting another 8x10 and more than likely now that I think about it more another svt classic and I'm just gonna split the signal. I am just having the worst luck with getting the right tone for the band. I need everything to sound really tight and clear but I also need to overdrive everything and I don't even know what else I was thinking of getting a sans amp and a sonic maximizer to clear things up a bit and get a better tone. Hopefully that will work. Thanks for your suggestions and help if you have anymore please let me know

Well unlike a lot of companies, Ampeg's cab ratings seem pretty honest. Those newer 810's will take pretty close to 800w, and an SVT turned up all the way will put out 700w peak so you should be in the clear. And if I were wanting to kill babies, I'd definitely add a 2nd 810 before getting a second head. I still think you're insane, but there does seem to be a market for puke inducing music so I can dig it.

Er yeah, ok 4PRO...

The AMPEG 810 needs to be whomped, I think that's what you are refering to as overdriven sound. It doesn't get crusty it just gets way punchy. The Toob SVT will give you tooby compression and its a good sound.

The 4PRO will give you SOME preamp push, but zero in the final. Its the wrong place to make overdrive. Jimmy is totally correct if you are looking to make a hurry up offense use a VT peddle.

Now, 4PRO will make a slight bit more noise than an SVT. But neither will drive a pair of 810's to maximum punch. They just don't make enough power.

I run each of my 4PRO's at 3/4 gain on the preamp and 5/8th cranked on the master. It whomps the cabs just right. If you think you need more power, then add a cab and an additional head...

16 speakers will always be louder than 8 provided they have equal power and you are actually powering the 16 speakers effectively.

A 300w tube amp split between two 800w cabs does not really make too much sense to me personally, but if you have the dollars to put the rig together, GO FOR IT! It would be ultra cool to own, but I'd find myself selling off the refrigerators and pairing the head with my Epifani stack...

If I just added another cab and powered 2 810's with 1 svt classic it would make everything louder? Figured it would just split the 300 watts it puts out between the 2 cabs. like not making anything louder really just making things stereo. And yeah I'm def gonna stay with the tubes now
When you double your speaker count you get an extra 6db of volume with the same wattage. Not quite twice as loud but pretty close.

It will convert your available power to sound more efficiently than your current 8 speakers.

Correction 2X the signal is 3DB.

However, the SVT and the 4PRO do not make enough power to WHOMP a pair of 810's to the level you think it needs to be whomped. You will actually sound better with just 1 cab.

When I refer to whomped is the sound it makes when its pushed, what makes up the AMPEG SOUND and stuff like that.

When hooking up a pair of 810's to my 4PRO; One. the power needs to be turned way too far up to drive the speakers, and, two, the speakers are unable to be driven hard enough to get the tone gotten by one cab per head.

If you look at all the BIG GUYS touring with more than 1 cab, they drive each cab with an amplifier.

This is also confirmed by Dino from AMPEG and this isn't just to sell more amps / cab, its reality.

When the cabs used 50 watt speakers, you'd drive two cabs, but not with 100 watt speakers.

But IF you are still determined to drive a pair, USE YOUR CL. Don't waste your time with a 4PRO, in the 2 channel mode it really doesn't make enough power @ 4 OHMS.

Specifically the 810E can be thoroughly whomped by a 4PRO, you have to keep the LF control down or you may bang the voice coils on the magnets........ it is NOT a super-low cabinet, and won't take big power at lows. 410HLF or 610HLF are better at that.

I agree completely; it will make very beautiful music right up to the point you bang the magnets... :hyper: You know Jerrold, I don't overly push excessive bass, but do play a "B" and I get really nice sound out of the 810's at very good volume.

Sure I got more smoke when I was playing "E", but if he uses a pair of SVT's and a Pair of 810's he'll have a very nice big rig that will do almost anything he wants it too.
