and it starts...modding the Squier 60's CV P

Okay so i bought a Squier 60'S CV Precision bass specifically to mod it and dump a bunch of money into something to never see it again but im really trying to make it mine so it dosent matter.

the list of possible mods going into the finished product should end up as follows.

-White pickup covers
-Original Fender Precision Bass Pickups (like in the 62' RIs)
-Knurled Flat top p bass barrel knobs
-White Pearloid Pickguard
-Hipshot A Style Bridge OR
Schaller Fine tune bridge (if i can find one by the time i need one)
-Schaller tuners
-Vintage Tint neck: Maple Board with black dots OR pearl blocked and bound (once again depending on what i can find and what kind of deal i can get)

any other ideas and insight are appreciated and anything with a highlighted OR is up for debate as they will be the last things i will be doing.

i will be using this thread to post the progress as it comes along and since its already started here come some pics!

so the pickup covers are done and im really pleased. pearloid PG within the week and hopefully some knobs as well

well considering i have already ordered the pickups, paid for my PG and im just waiting til the stores open tomorrow to get a screwdriver small enough to install the barrel knobs off my P Plus (theyll go back when i snag a pair online) and im currenty weighting my neck options with plenty of dough to spare.i say its GONNA BE EPIC!

Hmmm... been thinking about a similar project...

White covers... they look nicer with a darker p/g IMO...
Why replace the neck? It's the clincher as far as this bass goes.
Vintage tuners absolutely, and matching headstock.

Don't know what the stock pups are like do I can't comment there...

I like the white guard and the dome knobs so I'm looking forward to see the difference.

The bridge on these look sturdy enough... I'd prob keep it or maybe fit a vintage fender.

simple enough. i did it this way because im still going to recoup quite a bit back selling off the old parts so the price difference will be negligable.

i should get a decent bit back from the neck..my 62ri pups theyre FREE (thanks to my works rewards system) the neck, tuners and bridge are all ill have to pay a significant amount for and people really di the neck on this so i should have no problem moving it. id be replacing the tuners and bridge anyway so im all good. plus i got a pertty sweet deal on this whole package.


as for the neck is the clincher..for me its not. i play jazz necks and prefer maple boards. dont get me wrong its a nice neck but just not my style.

Still seems like it would have been cheaper to buy it all separately, and a lot less "buying and selling". Just my opinion of course. I'm still looking forward to seeing the end result. :)

eh...i dont have a workspace to paint and finish so this is just easier to have a functiong bass and swapping a piece here a piece there til i get what i want. itll be fun ;)

My suggestion is to leave the stock neck alone. One you replace that you have a parts bass, not a modified CV -- IMHO. Besides, the stock necks are fantastic as is!


Also, for others reading this thread, I have been playing my CV 50s non stop for a couple of days now, and the stock alnico pickup sounds wonderful. Take the time to give it a chance before replacing it for another. I find the tuners perfectly acceptable as well.

Fender Original Precision Bass Pickup
pots and cap CTS, Sprague orange drop
Fender barrel Knobs
Fender 62' Pickguard mint green w/ Pickguard Shield
Bridge and covers from a US Fender 62ri
Fender proper size thumbrest
Fender strap buttons
and; Fender flatwound strings

had most of the parts lying around - the bass was great the way it was new, i just wanted a general upgrade and it to look more 60s than 60s vibe - i also deglossed the body to a more matte finish - i guess its not a Squier 60s classic vibe anymore but a partso-bass ;) a great one though.

i bought it to mod and keep. the neck is one of the best P necks ive played, it feels nice but dosent 100% agree with my hands as jazz necks do. so thats why im swapping the neck.

the pickups do sound very nice. surprisingly nice. i just so happen to have a free set of 62 ri pups available.. thats right FREE! and since my other P already has barts i need a venue for the free pups, the CV is the perfect candidate. but if you have one the stock pups are nice and i would agree dont bother modding unless you have a perfect solution youre dying to try.

not a fan of the thin tuners and really want beefcake schallers on it like my P Plus.

Like i said i did this not as a diss to the stoc CV ..its a damn good bass. i did this to make an ultimate funky player to my specs thats ALL ME! i hope you guys follow along and enjoy the progress

I like the idea, even if its not any better (and I'm sure it will be anyway) after the mods, at least you will have had something to do with creating it, which makes you like it much more anyway.

I'm modding my first bass (also a Squier P) at the moment, I got it around 10 years ago and it spent those 10 years stock until around last October. When all I did was add a set of flats (you need these on your list ;)) and a new PG with gold screws. I now play this more than my other basses, even though it was just down to looks (I know shallow, but it looks great :D).

Since then I have added a new P pup, I still need a new bridge, and a J pickup (its a PJ), I'm also going to get a new neck, maybe a Fender one :hiding:. I intend to post a thread when complete.

Look forward to seeing yours completed :).

see...you get it. its the satisfaction factor of having it "your way" btw its already rocking a set of GHS brite flats on it until my TI Jazz flats get in.

hows she sound with the original Pups and the new pots and caps? is it pretty noticiable?

I bought some cream pickup covers off ebay for mine but they were just a bit too big so i had to file away part of the pickguard and make the holes for the pole pieces a little bigger to make them fit. Did you have any issues with that? Now the strings aren't quite aligned with the poles either.

sure did run into that issue. we probably got em off the same person. when i put em in i had to get one side to fit in snug then hold down the PG and pushed down on the pups pusshing toward the side where they already fit. as soon as it went flush it popped right through...took quite a bit of force though..there is ZERO margin for space its tight as a dolphins butt but it does fit..i was heated at first and thought id have to file with how much difference in size there seemed to be but it eventually worked out, its just very very tight
