Good God, are people still freaking out over that?

Bass Player magazine interview, 09/2004:

"Wolstenholme's gritty tone on 'Hysteria' is the result of his blending his clean Marshall DBS tone with two distortion-laden DBS rigs: one with an Electro-Harmonix Big Muff, and the other with a Human Gear Animato. To fatten the sound, he doubled his bass line with a sequenced synth-bass. While he recorded a direct signal from his bass, he says it was 'purely as a fail-safe measure; we didn't end up using it on record.' "

Basically, it can be reached a few different ways, with somewhat different results. kaputsport, I assume that's his formula for getting the basic sound live? The other one from the BP interview may have been studio-only, especially since that's a fairly complicated setup which might require a lot of time to tweak (not ideal for live situations).

The wine in the "Grail" is available in different flavors. ;)

I just take an already slightly gritty tone (Tonefactor Cream Pie or Catalinbread SFT) then use an X-Blender to blend that tone with a Swollen Pickle clone. Get's me a fat chunky layered Fuzz sound, which is close enough. Sometimes I put an OC-2 in before the Fuzz with Oct 2 off, Oct 1 at about 8-9 oclock and Direct to suit the volume (this just fattens things up without being overly muddy due to the amount of Oct1 dialled in).

The tone is actually multiple signal chains with multiple effects on, the muff being just one, turned to Chris's settings, and then volumed down to blend in. There is more going on in this than on pedal. To me, at least, it is the closest I have heard to his sound.

I cannot get 100% on it, as I do not have the full rig, but this is what is capable with my gear and setup.
